Earl Mixon Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 15 to Apr. 20, 2008.

Earl Mixon, a man who enjoyed the political spotlight but found his home at the Palm Beach County Housing Finance Authority, died after a long battle with liver cancer Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was 61.

"I will truly miss Earl," said Nelson Dozier, a friend since 1963. "He was a fun loving but fierce family man.

Mr. Mixon was a lifelong Palm Beach County resident -- raised on Douglas Avenue and Sixth Street -- who graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1964. He attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, then earned a masters degree from Nova University.

Mr. Mixon began his public life as the 26-year-old, lanky assistant finance director of Riviera Beach in 1973. From there, he moved on to be the finance director of Palm Beach County's Division of Housing and Community Development. By 1982, he was running the county's new Housing Finance Authority, where he oversaw the distribution of millions of dollars in tax-free bonds to developers for affordable housing projects.

"He loved what he did," said Betty Mixon, Mr. Mixon's wife.

Mr. Mixon enjoyed dabbling in politics, and, in 1982, became Mangonia Park's first black city councilman. He stayed on the council until 1987, then moved to West Palm Beach. Although Mr. Mixon made a couple of unsuccessful bids for a seat on the Port of Palm Beach, his political career ended in Mangonia Park.

Betty Mixon said her husband liked politics because he loved people.

"And he loved a good competition," she said. "He was an A-type person."

Mr. Mixon is survived by his wife and three daughters.

"That's what he talked about in the end," Betty Mixon said. "He talked about loving his family."

Daddy. Today makes 15 years that you went to go be with The Lord!!! Although, it´s been 15 years, it seems like it was just yesterday that we were calling each other 3 times a day, wanting nothing but to hear the others voice!!! One thing that I´ve learned to be true, is that it doesn´t get better, just a bit easier. Sometimes, I look in the mirror and smile bc the reflection reminds me so much of you. I remember spending nights at the cemetery, calling your phone just to hear your voicemail message. But, the most vivid thing I remember is seeing your face in my dream and you telling me you love me without saying a word. It was so real that I thought you were physically here with me. Daddy, we all miss you so much and it´s not a day that goes by that we don´t think or talk about you. It still hurts and I still cry when I think of you not being here with us physically, but I know that you are Happy & with The Lord, and I thank God everyday that when it came time to choose who gets the GREATEST Husband & Daddy, he chose my Mom and Sisters!!! Also, reading all the amazing things that everyone has to say about you made my heart smile. It shows how many other people you touched and what you meant to them too. Daddy we miss you & Love You Always & Forever

So... 12 years later and here I am. In my search for Chrichet, I found this obituary. To the Mixon family, I am sorry for your loss and never feel it's too late to send condolences since I know we never forget our loved ones that have passed on. I met Mr. Mixon when I spent the night at Chrichets house for the first time. I remember him telling me the role he played in designing the architecture of their home. As a visual arts student at the art school directly across the street from them, I was amazed and in awe at his accomplishments. I remember thinking how blessed Chrichet was to have such an amazing father since I grew up in a single family home with my mother. I will never forget walking by Mr. Mixons office in their home and thinking, wow, her father must be important. Mr. Mixon meant business in all aspects of his life and loved his family dearly. I was young but I could tell then this was the case. Chrichet and I continued to be friends even into her first year into college at FAMU. I remember coming to Tallahassee with my mother on a business trip and visiting her. I thought her apartment was beautiful and could tell by the items she possessed that she was loved and had a mom and dad looking out for her, making sure she had everything she needed. We lost contact over the years as many young adults do but I have never forgotten the Mixon family. I know they say time heals all wounds, but that's not always so. Our loved ones memories live on forever. Sometimes hearing a song or seeing a picture can conjure up thoughts of happiness, but also thrust the feeling of loss into the forefront of our minds. With that I will say, I hope the years have been kind to the Mixon family and maybe I run into you again one day.

I know this acknowledgement comes extremely late but everyone concerned knows its also extremely sincere...I haven't kept in touch with many people in wpb since losing my mom & sister and I didn't know about Earl....it truly saddens me....I was LarNique's first babysitter....yep!....picked her up from Mrs. C. Mixon house on 6th & Douglas everyday and loved it....Earl nicknamed me "silva thins" his birthday is a day after mine....over the years we lost touch but he & Betty were 2 of the few people I saw up @ Good Sam while visiting my mom and we talked on the stairwell..he came by my moms house after her passing in June 2005 ( he knew Ms. Georgianna well)....Betty and all of his girls(although I only know LarNique) I say this to you... To be absent in the body is to be present with The Lord...AMEN

God bless his family always

Earl, it seems just like yesterday that you returned back to your home with Jesus in(eternity) from your brief assignment here on earth where you had been strategically assigned. You were a 5*****(five star) daddy and husband. We (your family) were first and foremost in your life. Even in your illness, you were thinking of us and not of yourelf. Never complaining but encouraging and wanting to know if we were going to be okay....without you. I often think of how you would allow the girls to go places or do things that I disapproved of. You would tell them "you can go, but if your mother finds out,you are on your on"! LOL!. I think of you everyday and laugh when I think about the wheat grass you vowed not to drink.....anymore but,because of your love for me, you continued to drink it. you even wrote your own obituary so it would be less painful for us.
when I get a little weary, I remember that God is my refuge and strength, a very present help in the time of trouble. I remember how you waited until I said that we would be okay before you transitioned. Love knows nor has any boundaries. Love, Betty Mixon

Sorry you have lose a loved one in death,you have my sympathy. I hope you will find comfort in the days ahead. God's words are of great comfort to those who grieve. At Revelation 21:1-4, God promise us that he is 'making all things new and that death will be no more.' Keep this promise close to your heart, because soon we will be able to welcome back our love ones by means of the "resurrection" that Jesus promise at John 5:28,29. May these comforting words of God, be of comfort to you, at this time of great sorrow.

To Betty and the girls:
I am SO sorry to learn of the passing of your husband/dad, and my cousin, Earl Jr. I remember when he visited New York on business several years ago, we met for dinner and he spoke very fondly of you and his girls. His spirit was as lively as ever. I know that he will be sadly missed as he was truly a very "special" soul even during his childhood. I pray that God's love will support and strengthen you as you journey towards peace.
God loves you ALL...and so do I.

Earl Mixon was a wonderful son who came to be the wonderful Father. Our community has lost a good and steadfast man who selected public service for his life's work. I was favored to know him for more than 50yrs., as his childhood friend, youth church and school comrade and colleague in community interests.

May his family and our community continue to benefit from his presence in their lives. I join the many people who now raise their hats to his rich and giving spirit wishing him Peace on his journey. His devotion to his Mother before her homegoing,his family, his community and church is testament to that spirit. Though our lives took us in different parts, I was particularly proud of his achievements in his professional and political life.

Betty, LarNique, Shamika,& Chriche', our prayers are that the Lord keep you and help you live peacefully with your memories and the love he left for you. You are all in our thoughts.

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Begin every morning talking with God and if you get lonely, remember you are precious in his sight and he loves you and will never leave you....Gods compassion never fails. it is renewed every morning, Great is your Faithfulness.
I was a very good friend of Earl's. I loved him very much because he was so kind to my family and I. He lived his life like most of us wish we could .... God first, family, friends and then work, in that order. Earl was a great negotiator. You always knew where you stood with him because he was real. He will be sadly missed. He was appreciated in every way while he was here on earth, but he is in the ever loving arms of King Jesus. Farewell my dear friend, see you in Zion.

Mrs. Betty,

Words can not express my genuine sympathy to you, his 3 daughters, and your entire family. I, like most, are still in disbelief that Mr. Mixon is no longer with us. However, he's left behind a legacy of "Family, love, and community service"!!! I pray that you find comfort in your fond memories and scriptural passages of Phillipians 4:6, 7; Revelation 21:3, 4 and John 5:28, 29.

Mrs. Betty Mixon, Shamika, Chriche', and the entire Mixon Family, may Jehovah God, Our Heavenly Father, grant you much needed "Holy Spirit, Comfort, and Love" during this most grevious period!!!

Earl was truly a good friend of mind. I meet Earl in the early 70's.He always called to see how I was doing and he kept me smiling and laughing all the time that we spoke. When he last came to Atlanta Earl made sure we talked. Earl loved all his girls,he will tell me that they all was his life.He was a sweet friend of mind and I will truly miss him. To be absent from the world is to be present with the Lord. May God Bless your soul, always a dear friend

Earl, I only met you a short time ago, but you welcomed me into your office like we were old friends. You gave me advice, direction and support. You were a professional, yet relaxing to work with at the same time. You will be missed in Palm Beach County and I am sure many other places. I'll remember you!

Remember earth has no sorrow that God can not heal. Although I know Earl will be sorely missed, don't forget he is no longer in any pain, nor is he suffering because God has sent His Angels to bring him home to rest. Earl was a great guy, we grew up together in the same neighborhood, same school and enjoyed the same people as friends. I especially enjoyed having a few laughs with him and my mentor and former boss, Tony Smith who is also a great friend of his. I know Mr. Smith will miss him an awful lot too. God is faithful and He will not let you be tempted beyond your strength but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape that you may be able to endure it (meaning though it may be hard now, God will not leave you) My prayers goes out to you and your family.

My Prayer is that GOD will keep you strong and overshadowed with HIS LOVE.
Mr. Mixon was a real gentleman. The glow that radiated from his smile was refreshing. What a wonderful example. I am thankful that my path crossed with his - if only for a little while. May GOD Bless!
