Earl Rowland Obituary

Earl Lee Rowland
July 13, 1955 - Oct. 27, 2018
Seaside
"Big Earl" was his chosen moniker; he never met a stranger.
Earl Lee Rowland Jr. passed from this life during prayer while surrounded by an abundance of loving family members and friends. What an amazing home going!
Big Earl was born in Washington, DC. Shortly thereafter his family made their home in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. His family and childhood friends called him "Skippy". Earl was the eldest of four children; two sisters, Jackie and Barbara and a brother, George. Earl's parents and his youngest sister Barbara preceded him in death.
Big Earl loved sports, especially basketball! After graduating from Boggs Academy in Keysville, Georgia, Earl attended Winston Salem State University and played basketball for the legendary coach Clarence "Big House" Gaines. He spent time with the New York Knicks before enlisting in the U.S. Army. In his service, he also suited up and played for the All Army basketball team. While stationed at Fort Ord, California he met, and later married, Glorietta, his wife of 38 years.
Following his military service, Earl worked for the City of Seaside Oldemeyer Center and then for All Saints Day School in Carmel Valley. He was coach, mentor, and advocate for so many of the youth in these communities, providing guidance and instilling positivity towards achieving goals. He pushed them hard, but it was with affection and tough love. Many of the youth and young adults, as well as their parents, admired Earl and viewed him as a positive influence and role model.
Big Earl was boisterous and loved spirited discussions with everyone he knew and anyone he would meet. Earl never bit his tongue, so all who came in contact with him knew exactly where they stood or how he felt about any given situation. Earl was passionate when expressing his views.
Big Earl loved life! He loved his family and his extended family which included many not related by blood. He was a caring individual and those in his circle knew the extent he would go to lend a helping hand if necessary.
Big Earl is survived by his wife Glorietta, son; E J (Brittney), daughter; Jasmin, sister; Jackie, brother; George Williams (Sandra), aunts, uncles, cousins, mother in law, sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces, nephews, and a host of others that all loved him dearly.
Viewing will be Friday November 9th from 4-8pm at Bayside Community Mortuary. Service will be Saturday November 10th at Greater Victory Temple COGIC starting at 11am. The repass will be at the Seaside Boys & Girls Club immediately following the service.

Big Earl was truly one of a kind. I had the great pleasure of having Earl not only teach my three sons and myself great basketball skills over the past 15 years but Earl taught all of us lessons in life that they will last a lifetime. Big Earl will be missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. Our condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Big Earl became a customer of mine over 18yrs ago, in that time he became a friend and most of all a Big Brother. Big Earl was very proud of his family and did not know why God blessed him with such a beautiful wife and great kids. I can't count how many times he would come in and start talking to someone who he had know clue who they were, but by the time he left, they knew Big Earl. He would always greet me by saying, my Brother. I'm going to miss you my Brother. (tremendously)

I met Earl in 1992 as my supervisor with The S.T.E.P. Program. He quickly became a friend whose input I highly respected and sought out over the years. His love for family and community will be deeply missed.

Glorietta, E.J. and Jasmine, my heartfelt condolences go out to you. May God's comforting arms embrace you as His grace keeps you.

Glorietta, we are so sorry for your loss of Big Earl. We loved him much. When Roy was working for Earl at the oldemeyer center He had accidentlly locked Ashley in the car ( she was only a few months old) Earl to the rescue! he broke the back window out to unlock the door and get my baby out! He was a great friend, and basketball coach. We will never forget him. Keeping your family in prayer.

God giveth life and he takes it! For "Big Earl" his journey on earth has ended but his legacy will proceed him. May the comfort of God bring the Rowland Family closer together during these hard times, for man bore of woman will die and everyday is a blessing. No one ever has the right words to tell a family but as they prepare to lay you to rest be comforted that he was loved....!

Big Earl was a true friend. We began our friendship with him taking my nine year old son Joe under his wing as his basketball coach and making Joe a college bound elite player. In the ten years since Earl became one of my best friends.
We differed in a lot of points of views and political
philosophies, but we had one heck of a good time and for these reasons among others I miss the big guy everyday.
I can imagine Earl showing up at the pearly gates and telling St. Peter in no uncertain terms, " your new coach is here, now show me to the courts!"
