William Haug
The first time I met my cousin me and the neighborhood kids were playing ball in our back yard. He pulled up in his car and got out to go see my Father for an appointment. He stopped and talked to all of use but had to excuse himself saying he needed to see a man about a back alignment. Afterwards my Father brought him into the yard and introduced him to all of the kids and me for the first time.

Ed we will miss you and our condolences, prayers and Love to the Family.

Saw him play all those years ago in the Burgh. Home grown no nonsense guy. Never too busy to sign for a fan. Too young.

I first met Otter when he managed the Allentown Ambassadors in 1997. I would show up at the games two hours early just to go into his office and listen to him tell baseball stories. His tales were always hilarious, but he also taught me tons about the inside game of baseball. I still have a baseball card of him when he managed the Ambassadors on my office wall. He's smiling and has his arms crossed his chest. That's how I will always remember him.

I was blessed in 1978 and 1979 to be a Pirates Batboy when they came to play the Orioles at Miami Stadium and got the chance to speak with Ed Ott. In 1979 in the summer I also had another opportunity to speak to Ed Ott at Three Rivers Stadium and later years in Spring Training when he was coach for Phil Garner. Ed was always approachable and fan friendly. He had that special Central PA charm down to earth, played hard, appreciated his fans, and worked super hard to be a catcher after he was originally signed as an outfielder. I remember him telling me Joe Lonnett the Pirates coach used to teach him how to block balls and would take out the fly ball machine at Pirate City and have him practice catching Pop Ups. Ed worked hard became a very respectable player and did a good job platooning with Steve Nicosia to give the Pirates a solid catching tandem. RIP Ed Ott. Remember his banner at Three Rivers "OTT TO BE GOOD" Best to his family and condolences. OTTER was a good guy. Ira M. Katz Plantation Florida

My sincere condolences to Ed's family. He was an incredibly nice person. I knew Ed when he played for the pirates. I will never forget the time he gave me one of his catchers mitts. I still have it 45 years later. He was the type of person who always made you feel welcome and important to him. I got a chance to thank him several years ago and had not changed. It's very sad to learn of his passing.

Ed was a quintessential catcher, teammate, and baseball man. Brawny, tough as nails, devoted/always had your back/wouldn't back down, loved the game, and he played hard and well.
