Ed Skonicki Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2018.
Ed left this world to join his beloved wife, Olympia, and his Savior on August 12, 2018. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 30, 1937 to Edwin and Marie who have predeceased him along with his brother David. He is survived by his son, Jeff, and daughter, Michele Bedard, both of whom made him very proud. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Ashley, Amanda, Brooke, Hailey, Nicholas, and great granddaughter Piper, each of whom was his favorite. Also surviving him are his brother James of Des Plaines, Illinois and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Ed worked for Allied Radio Corp, Transunion, Bond Stores, and Continental Bank in Chicago before joining Citibank in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His journeys with Citibank took him from South Dakota to New York, Las Vegas, Brussels, Belgium before he retired to Las Vegas. He was able to stay retired for about a year when his loving wife told him to get off her turf. As God would have it, he found himself as the Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, where he remained for about 5 years until he was able to retire in 2003.

He moved to Las Ventanas Senior Independent Living Community in 2011. He often said it was one of the best decisions he ever made.

He has always felt that his greatest achievements were his marriage, his children and grandchildren, but he was always proud of his participation in his Church, through the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre, Legatus, St Vincent de Paul Society, and membership in St Joseph Husband of Mary Parish.

Ed was a real booster of Las Vegas and tried to give back to his adopted community through Catholic Charities, United Way, St Therese, I Have a Dream Foundation, UNLV Foundation, and other charitable and community organizations. He will be missed not only by his family, but by all of the groups on which he served as a board member, volunteer, contributor, and supporter.

Memorial Gathering will be from 2-3pm and Vigil Service from 3-4pm Sunday, August 19 at Palm South Jones Mortuary, 1600 S Jones Blvd, Las Vegas, NV 89146. Funeral Mass will be at 10am on Monday, August 20 at St Joseph, Husband of Mary Catholic Church, 7260 W Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89117. Ed's final resting place will be next to his wife Olympia in Calumet City, Chicago. Memorial Service from 4-7pm, Tuesday, August 21 will be at Tews Funeral Home, 18230 S Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd North, Las Vegas, NV, would be greatly appreciated.

Remembering back when I was a child, you were a giant man with a kind smile who never let us neighborhood kids get away with too much mischief, Mr. Skonicki.
Whether it be playing ding dong ditch or running amok through the backyard or racing garbage cans down your driveway, you let us go so far then you and the other Dads would reel us all back in.
Thanks for keeping us kids on the straight and narrow, well, not too straight and a little wider than narrow.
You will be missed. God bless you.

Sincerely . NT

It was a privilege and an honor for my husband and I to know Ed. He was not only a Pilar in the community but a true example of humility and care for those less fortunate during his lifetime. Our condolences to Ed's family.

Daddy, I still cannot believe you are gone. I still want to pick up the phone to talk to you. I am so blessed to have you for a father. It's with pride that I can say I am your daughter. You touched everyone you came in contact with. You are forever in my heart and my memories will keep me happy and laughing. I love you daddy. Heaven has another special person. You and mommy are together again to watch over us.
