Ed J. "Chief" Worms, age 87 of New Munich died Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich for Edmund Worms who died Saturday, December 10 at Mother of Mercy Nursing Home in Albany. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Friends may call Monday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 to 10:30 a.m. at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Melrose. Parish prayers will be at 8 p.m. followed by the Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Joseph's Men's Society at 8:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home in Melrose. Edmund Worms was born December 13, 1917 in New Munich to Mathias and Catherine (Sieben) Worms. He was united in marriage to Carmella Petermeier on June 25, 1946 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Melrose. Ed and his brother Ralph owned and operated Worms Lumber & Ready Mix of New Munich. Ed and Carmella owned and operated the St. Rosa Resort on Big Birch Lake. He retired in 1986. The couple spent 17 winters in Arizona. Ed helped organize the New Munich Conservation Club and the New Munich Fire Department. He was the fire chief for many years and a talented carpenter, brick layer and builder. He enjoyed wood carving, playing his harmonica, singing, ballroom dancing, hunting, fishing and restoring old vehicles. Ed was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in New Munich and a life long member of the church choir. He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, St. Leo's Court and St. Joseph's Men's Society. He also was a charter member of the New Munich Lions, president of Big Birch Lake Association and a member of the Stearns County Historical Society. Survivors include his wife, Carmella Worms of New Munich; children, Steve Worms and his wife, Shirley of New Munich, Katherine Statz and her husband, Robert of Onamia, Eva Mae Kluempke and her husband, George of Cold Spring, Naomi Casebolt and her husband, Thomas of Edina and Matthew Worms and his wife, Sue of Freeport; 14 grandchildren; brother and sisters, Mary Ann "Mutch" Dierkhissing of Rochester, Harold "Boysie" Worms and his wife, Marie of New Munich and Rose Mary "Babe" Osendorf and her husband, Bob of Melrose; brother-in-law, Curt "Bud" Halseth of Sun City, AZ; and sister-in-law, Bridget Worms of New Munich. Ed was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ralph Worms; and sister, Connie Halseth. Serving as casket bearers will be Mark Statz, Michael Statz, Christopher Worms, Carl Worms, Brian Worms, Aaron Worms, Dustin Casebolt and Grant Kluempke. Serving as cross bearer will be Neil Worms and scripture bearer will be Chelsea Casebolt. Honorary bearers will be Barney Hollermann, Alfred Feldewerd, Jerome Lemm, Roy Hoppe, Art Doll, New Munich Lions and St. Joseph's Men's Society.
