Eddie Palmieri Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 7 to Aug. 8, 2025.
Eddie Palmieri, the electrifying pianist, composer, and bandleader who helped shape modern salsa and Latin jazz, died August 6, 2025, at his home in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was 88. Family members said he had endured an extended illness.

Born December 15, 1936, in New York City, Palmieri grew up in a Puerto Rican household where music was a part of daily life. He studied piano young, detoured briefly to timbales as a teen, then returned to the keyboard with percussive fire.

In 1961 he formed Conjunto La Perfecta, replacing the violins that are traditionally at the center of charanga music with a trombone frontline and forging a tougher, brass-driven sound that reshaped Latin dance music. The group’s innovations helped define the sound later called salsa.

Palmieri blazed a new trail at the 1975 Grammy Awards when "The Sun of Latin Music" earned the inaugural award for Best Latin Recording. Over a career spanning nearly 40 albums, he won eight Grammys.

He pushed boundaries with albums like "Harlem River Drive," fusing Afro-Caribbean rhythms with funk, soul, and jazz, and he kept performing and recording into his eighties. He was named an NEA Jazz Master in 2013 and received the Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award the same year.

Offstage, Palmieri was known as a champion of Latin culture. His kinetic piano attack—what he once called the outlet of a “frustrated percussionist”—became a signature of the New York sound.

Palmieri is survived by five children—four daughters and one son—and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Iraida, in 2014.

A visitation and funeral were held in New York; the family offered a public livestream and asked that memorial gifts be made to WBGO, El Museo del Barrio, the Jazz Foundation of America, and Women's Housing Economic Development Corporation.

Your piano wizardry, matched by the best storytelling I've ever known, will always be remembered by me, and by the students and audiences we brought to your two concerts here in Tacoma, Washington. I've presented many, many performers over decades of booking the best, but YOU sir, are the ONLY one who I can share a December 15 birthday with. Condolences to Eddie Jr., and to your family, and thanks to them for sharing you with us.

Eddie when I first heard your sound I froze. I couldn't believe what I was hearing and I've been obsessed with you ever since. I am now 62 years old and I could never get enough of you .
Really made me sad hearing about your passing. Dad used to talk about you because you were in his class in school and I learned so much listening to your music. You healed me. You raised me during some difficult times. Your music also healed me. I have so many memories. So many great times with Mom and Dad. I hope you're dancing in heaven mom's up there. Please play for her. I'll miss you and thank you. Love LisaG

I have listened to Eddie Palmieri for close to 50 years and attended many of his concerts in NYC and New Jersey as well as gigs in jazz clubs and saw him perform in Paris. He was a musician and band leader that one could say was always around with his many diverse groups and we grew to have him around as part of our lives. One can say that his music is immortal. Condolences to his family.

He stood beside Pietri, the Young Lords, and our Puerto Rican community -not with slogans, but with symphonies. He made me, and so many others, feel visible in a world that tried to erase us.

Rest in Power, Eddie. Gracias por todo.
Tu música vive. Siempre.
