Eden Michaelis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 1, 2025.
Eden Laurel Michaelis, born on February 8th, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully on December 25, 2024. Eden is predeceased by her husband Rabbi James Michaelis (2023).

Eden began her career teaching in elementary schools, where she inspired young minds with her passion for reading. Her commitment to education and her innovative approaches to reading instruction eventually led to her appointment as Reading Supervisor, a role in which she worked tirelessly to enhance literacy programs across The Bronx.

Eden's leadership extended beyond her professional life. A longtime resident of Nyack, Eden lived a life marked by love for her family and a dedication to her faith. A pillar of the Congregation Sons of Israel, she was co-president of Temple Sisterhood, participated actively in Torah study, and contributed to fostering a welcoming synagogue community.

Outside of her professional and spiritual commitments, Eden was a creative mind who delighted in writing, found joy in global travel, and transformed spaces through interior design. At family gatherings, she was the heart and soul of every celebration, crafting perfect details-from elegant tablescapes to curated conversation.

Eden is survived by her loving sons, Jonathan Friedlander and Joshua Friedlander; her cherished sister, Ronny Borrok; and her adoring grandchildren, Sophie Friedlander, Daniel Friedlander, Juliet Michaelis, and Charlie Michaelis. She is also survived by her daughters-in-law, Maia Daniels and Casie Jordan; her nieces, Alix Mueller (Kevin) and Ashley Lasker (Mike); her grandnieces, Zoey Mueller and Maddi Lasker; and her stepchildren Dr. Ben Michaelis (Carrie) and Cheri Michaelis (Steve Marks). Eden leaves behind a close circle of cousins, including Lois Lombardo (and family), Steve Ross, Loren Marks, and Sima Verzino.
