Edgar Martin "Marty" Irwin's Family Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Husband, Father, and Grandfather.

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Edgar Martin Irwin, affectionately known as Marty, on November 13, 2023, in Independence, Missouri. Marty was born on March 22, 1929, in Kansas City, Missouri to Joseph Wilson Irwin and Della (Walker) Irwin. He was the beloved husband of Celia Elaine (Lynn) Irwin and devoted father to Marcy Irwin and Scott Irwin (Beth). Marty was also a loving grandfather to Kourtlyn Irwin, Anna Irwin (Wyatt Knudsen), and Tim Irwin (Carli McFarland).

After graduating from Northeast High School in 1946, Marty pursued his love for learning by continuing his education. Throughout his life, he maintained a curious mind and fostered a deep appreciation for knowledge and growth. Marty's career spanned many years as he started working for Amoco Oil in 1952. Through hard work and dedication, he worked his way up to become the supervisor of accounting before retiring after an impressive 39-year tenure, during which he served at their refineries in Sugar Creek, Missouri, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Savannah, Georgia. He was known for his professionalism and attention to detail in his work. Marty's commitment inspired those around him and made a lasting impact at Amoco Oil. In addition to his professional achievements, Marty served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1951 during the Korean Conflict. His service demonstrated his unwavering dedication to his country.

After serving his country, on April 26, 1952, Marty married the love of his life, Celia and started a family. Their recipe for making their marriage of over 71 years work was simple: "love each other." Beyond work and military service, Marty had many passions that brought him joy. He had a talent for writing poetry and took pleasure in expressing himself through his words. Marty also nurtured a sense of adventure and loved exploring both nationally and internationally. His travels took him far and wide — he visited all 50 states of the United States, as well as various European countries, Mexico, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Egypt, and several Caribbean Islands. He even had the incredible opportunity to traverse the Panama Canal, an experience that left a lasting impression on him.

Marty's strong faith was central to his life. He was a charter member of the River Boulevard Baptist Church in Sugar Creek, Missouri. Within the church community, he served as Chairman of the Deacons, taught Sunday school, and was a Founding Member of the Bo-Ski-Fun religious social club. Marty's unwavering commitment to his church underscored his dedication to his spiritual life and his desire to uplift and support others.

Marty will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He is preceded in death by his father Joseph Wilson Irwin, mother Della Irwin, sisters Missouri Belle "Babe," Elsie, Ruby, and Virginia, brothers Edward, Floyd, and Dar. Although he has left this world physically, Marty will forever be remembered for the love he shared with those around him, his sense of humor, and the enduring impact he made on their lives.

The viewing for family and friends will be held at Carson-Speaks Chapel in Independence, Missouri on November 17, 2023. The visitation will take place from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM. Following the visitation, a Funeral Service will commence at 2:00 PM with another hour available for friends and loved ones to pay their respects before Marty is laid to rest during an Interment ceremony at Mt. Washington Cemetery following the service.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Celia Elaine (Lynn) Irwin, Marcy Irwin, Scott Irwin (Beth), Kourtlyn Irwin, Anna Irwin (Wyatt Knudsen), Tim Irwin (Carli McFarland), and all who are mourning this profound loss. May you find solace in the treasured memories you shared with Marty and the knowledge that his spirit will forever live on in your hearts.
