Edith "DeDe" Laver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 17, 2025.
Edith "DeDe" Gresham Laver, 81, of Bethlehem, passed away on September 11th, 2025, at Arden Courts Old Orchard. Born on December 2nd, 1943 in Washington, DC, DeDe was the daughter of Emmet and Rebecca (Spaatz) Gresham, and the granddaughter of her adored grandfather, General Carl A. Spaatz.

DeDe was a proud graduate of Swarthmore College, and received her JD from the University of Pennsylvania. She was a lawyer for Bethlehem Steel Corporation for decades, and when she retired, she spent her time volunteering for many local organizations and babysitting her beloved grandchildren. She was a board member for both the Bach Choir of Bethlehem and New Bethany, and an enthusiastic volunteer with the yearly AAUW book fair. DeDe never shelved a book until she had read it, and the thousands of books in her bookcases are a testament to how much she loved to read. A founding member of Young Atheists and Agnostics in high school, DeDe was a lifelong atheist, and her belief that this was the only life she would have showed in how much she gave of herself to her community and her family.

She is survived and will be so missed by her daughters and sons-in-law, Rachel and Peter Sierk, and Rebecca and Jason Farrell; her grandsons, Jacob and Jameson Farrell; her sisters, Katharine and Rebecca Gresham; and her large extended family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Bethany, the Bach Choir of Bethlehem, or the Alzheimer's Association. A Celebration of Life will be held on October 25th.

I will miss seeing DeDe at choir rehearsals. She was one of our biggest fans and it was beautiful to witness how the music brought her such life and joy!

I got to know DeDe when I volunteered at New Bethany and later on the board of the Bach Choir. She was a great supporter of the choir members and I was always grateful for that. I remember her asking why the choir members´ names weren´t printed in the Bach at Noon programs. I loved that spirit! She had a keen sense of justice which I think is one of the most important of human qualities. I will miss her.

DeDe´s presence both at rehearsals and concerts will be greatly missed. It was clear how dedicated she was to the Bach Choir. May she rest in peace.

Dear Rachel and Rebecca,
It is truly my honor to have known your mom, and to have spent many lovely hours with her. We had wonderful conversations about so many things - Japanese art, books, music, The Bach Choir, Mahalia Jackson, musicals, her girls, her "Papa Tooey"...
I'll always remember our walks through the neighborhood, our afternoons spent on the screened-in porch watching the birds and deer and admiring the trees, and our times at the piano, when she would enthusiastically sing along while I played songs like "When the Red, Red Robin Comes Bob-Bob-Bobbin' Along", "Amazing Grace", and "When the Saints Go Marching In" (a particular favorite of hers). My life has truly been enriched by your mom's friendship, and I will always remember her.
I know you will miss your mom so much, and I pray that you and your extended families will be comforted by the memories you made with her.

Sending love and comforting hugs to all of you as you walk through this season of loss,

Rachel Rinehimer

I will so miss DeDe's smiling face at every Bach Choir rehearsal and concert. She was a brilliant, lovely person, and I will never forget her.

Dede was one of the first people I met when I came to work for the Bach Choir. Over the years, it became clear to me that she was a strong, wise and community minded person who cared deeply about the choir, the music, and our community. As a former Board member, a familiar presence at our concerts and events and frequently at rehearsals, she was familiar to all of us and we will miss her. Dede will always be part of our Bach Choir legacy.
