Edith Hatherill Obituary

Edith Merrick Hatherill, 97, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 14, 2011 at her home.

Edith worked at the A&P Bakery in Syracuse for 10 years, before she owned and operated Hatherill's Restaurant in Middlebury Center, Pa., for 22 years.

She loved cooking for her family, gardening and quilting with the "Chatham Area Quilters." She was a strong, hard-working, good woman, who took care of not only her family, but anyone in need. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Edith was predeceased by her husband, Lewis, in 1965; her daughters, Peggy Guadagno in 1993, and Beverly Rubado in 2008; and grandsons, Patrick Smyth and Donnie Rubado in 1957.

She is survived by her son, Richard (Beverly); her daughter, Janet (Patrick) Smyth; son-in-law, Jerry (Linda) Guadagno; 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be held Monday at Hollis Funeral Home, 1105 W. Genesee Street, Syracuse, N.Y.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Beech Flats Cemetery in Canton, Pa.

What memories I have of this wonderful lady!! I started working for her at Hatherill's when I was 16......she instilled such good work ethic in all of us! I have stayed in touch with her throughout the following 40+ years!! She leaves a great legacy!

Hatherill's was such a fun place to stop by for coffee or a great fish dinner. I remember the place was always spotless.

Aunt Edith was a wonderful loving person - she was my grandmothers sister and I remember when I was little the two of them together at the restaurant snickering and chatting a mile a minute. She will be be missed greatly, but her spirit will live on in her family.
