Published by Daily Progress from Oct. 13 to Oct. 14, 2011.
Edith (Kirby) Pace

Edith Marie (Kirby) Pace, 78, of Scottsville, left her loving and devoted family on Tuesday, October 11, 2011, after a long, courageous battle with cancer, to join her heavenly father whom she loved very much. She passed at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born on November 11, 1932 in Albemarle County, a daughter of the late George W. and Kathryn Kirby. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Claude Leonard "Honey" Pace Jr.; three sisters, Willie Herndon, Ruth Herndon and Jean Ann Kirby; and a special nephew, Kenneth M. Herndon Jr., who was like a brother to her. Mrs. Pace was a long-time member of Calvary Baptist Church in Scottsville and retired from Uniroyal. Her greatest love was serving her Lord and caring for her family. Survivors include her children, Wanda Matney and her husband, Oliver, James Pace and his wife, Janet, Richard Pace and his wife, Diane, Barbara Shifflett and her husband, Rodney, Michael Pace and his wife, Kathy, all of Scottsville; and Kathy Snoddy and her husband, Sam, of Buckingham; 10 grandchildren; 13great-grandchildren; a brother, George H. Kirby of Scottsville; a devoted niece who was like a sister, Frances Herndon of Scottsville; a loving great-nephew, Jeffrey Suddarth of Scottsville; and her beloved dog, Buckshot. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday, October 14, 2011, at Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville by Pastor Terry Tolliver of St. Andrews Baptist Church in Buckingham. Burial will follow at Scottsville Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 8 p.m. Thursday, October 13, 2011, at the funeral home. Edith's family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of the Piedmont and the Hope Center at Martha Jefferson Hospital for all their professional love, care and support. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911 or to the American Cancer Society, 1445 Rio Road East, Suite 104, Charlottesville, VA 22901. To All The Pace Family,

I know that it is never easy to say goodbye to a loved one especially someone as loving and caring as your mother. She believed in the Lord and put her trust in him so all of you would not have to worry about her. Just believe in the same and know that she is reuniting with the love of her life.

To All Members of the Pace Family,

It seems just yesterday that Edith and I shared many precious years working together. I will always cherish the photograph of the two of us taken together at my retirement. I hope you will also find that special photo or memory that brings you joy rather than sadness during this difficult time. May you all now find peace and solace in knowing that your mother can now continue her beautiful romance with Mr. Pace in the holy chapel in the sky. My thoughts will be with you always.
