Edith Sloan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2012.
Edith Marie Christensen Sloan, 92, of Navasota, Texas died on Saturday, September 22, 2012 at The Sheridan nursing home, her residence for the past several years. Edith was born on September 2, 1920 in Corsicana, Texas, the first child of Ruby Hall Christensen and Marinus Holger Christensen. She grew up in central Texas, San Antonio, Three Rivers and Victoria. She married Julius John Sloan, Jr. of Victoria in 1936 and hopscotched with him through the oilfields of east Texas. They moved to Houston where their first son Julius John III (Jay) was born. They spent the World War II years in Oklahoma City and returned to Houston in 1946, where sons Thomas Glenn and Donald Reese were born.

Primarily a homemaker, Edith served multiple terms as Cub Scout Den Mother as the younger sons grew up, and she actively participated in school groups, the neighborhood association and local women=s clubs. After the younger boys were in school she worked part-time in retail, principally at Sears, in the candy department (to their delight). She worked full-time after they were no longer in school. Her greatest pleasure during those years was spending time in the summers at Rockport, Texas, boating, fishing and visiting with friends.

Edith is survived by two of her sons, Jay and wife Patsy Sloan of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Donald and wife Carolyn Sloan of Magnolia, Texas, and Peggy Sloan, widow of Thomas, of Navasosta; seven grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Julius, brothers George and Wayne Christensen of Baltimore, Maryland, sister Lucille Burns of Boerne, Texas, and son Thomas Sloan of Navasota.

The family will receive friends on Friday, September 28, 2012 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm in the Hunters Creek Chapel at Earthman Funeral Directors, 8303 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77024. Funeral Service will be held Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 10:00 am in the Mausoleum Chapel at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Road, Houston, Texas 77077. Interment to follow.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Sheridan of Navasota for their care and concern for Edith during her final years.

I worked for others at 42-Place and remember Ms.Sloan crossing the street with her basket of clothes on her walker as she came over to wash her clothes. She was quite a talker & we always visited (I mostly listened) while we were both in the laundry room at 42-Place. More recently I visited with her at the Sheridan in Navasota while I was there visiting with my Mom. She was quite a a character and what an interesting person she was to listen to. Ms. Sloan never met a stranger it seemed to me. Enjoyed her tremendously, Cindy Baker in Navasota, TX God bless Ms. Sloan and her loved ones.....
