She was born on Dec. 22, 1961 in Wilmington, DE, the daughter of Daniel and Louise Thornton. Dr. Thornton was an associate professor of English in the department of languages and literatures at the UW-Whitewater. Edie was highly regarded as an insightful, energetic and inspiring teacher of both English courses and courses in the women's studies department. Colleagues and students appreciated the atmosphere of vitality and intimacy that she created in her classroom. Her research on Edith Wharton presented both in this country and abroad, was ground breaking and exciting. Professionally, she was active in both the Edith Wharton Society and the American Literature Society where she regularly presented her work.
