Edmund Cary Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 28, 2025.
Edmund Scott Cary, who navigated life with grit, independence, and a biting sense of humor, passed away in Watsonville, California, on September 26, 2025. Born in Fresno, California, Scott was the son of Edmund Shepard Cary and Anne Scott Brew, both of whom preceded him in death. He grew up with his sister, Tory Cary of Minnesota, and graduated from Bullard High School.

Scott's love for the sea defined much of his life. As a boat captain, he built not just a livelihood but a community of friends who shared his passion for open water. He was at home with the wind on his face and the horizon ahead of him, always happiest when steering his own course.

Beyond the sea, Scott embraced tennis, art, culture, and music. An avid reader with a sharp mind, he was never short of a sarcastic remark that could land somewhere between cutting and hilarious. His humor was peculiar, sometimes disarming, but always authentically his.

Despite his stoicism and fiercely independent nature, Scott carried a deep compassion-especially for animals and the natural world. Those who knew him will remember his wit, his stories, and his ability to be both stubborn and tender in equal measure.

Scott is survived by his sister, Tory; his children, Joshua, Patrick, and Mercedes; and his grandchildren, Kieran, Bohdi, Owen, and Summer.

He leaves behind not just a family who loved him, but also a circle of friends and a boating community who will miss his presence, his laughter, and the strange comfort of knowing that he would always find a way to have the last word.
