Edna Van der Vort Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 14, 2025.
Edna Margaret Van der Vort (née Bruck), age 97, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2025, in Sunnyvale, California. Born on March 19, 1928, in Chicago, Illinois, Edna lived a vibrant and full life marked by creativity, curiosity, and deep connections with those around her.

She was the beloved wife of the late Robert Van der Vort and the cherished daughter of Stephen and Rose Bruck. Edna was also preceded in death by her sisters Kay Bruck and Rosemary Bruck. She is warmly remembered by her daughters Karen Knoblaugh, Lisa Vincent, and Julia Liess.

Edna was a true fighter, battling various ailments over the last 10 years, and she hung tightly to the motto "never let 'em see you sweat." She was so strong and endured so much, just to get another day of life. When asked how she had managed to live so long, her reply was always, "I'm just interested in things," revealing a mind always eager to learn. Edna wouldn't leave the house without a scarf around her neck, her lipstick, and at least one piece of jewelry, and she was so proud every time someone commented that she could not possibly be as old as she was.

Edna's life was a rich tapestry woven with artistic expression and intellectual passion. She found joy in beading and creating stained glass pieces that reflected her colorful spirit. A voracious reader with an insatiable curiosity about the world, Edna embraced every opportunity to explore new ideas and places. Her love of travel took her far and wide, each journey adding another layer to her remarkable story. One of her very recent comments reflecting her love of life was "I always feel that there's more."

Those who knew Edna will remember her as outgoing and energetic-a true lover of life who could light up any room she entered. Whether enjoying quiet moments alone or reveling in the company of others at a lively party, she had a magnetic presence that drew people in. Her enthusiasm was infectious; she had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued.

Edna touched countless lives with her warmth and vitality. She leaves behind not only a legacy of creativity and exploration but also a circle of people who truly loved her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her and continue to inspire joy, curiosity, and connection in the lives she touched.

Just about everybody who knew her has a special Edna story. If you have one, please feel free to share.

I am so saddened to hear of dear, sweet Edna´s passing. We met through the El Camino Hospital Auxiliary. That experience was invaluable, and one of the best things I gained was my friend, Edna. She had the gift of listening and making those around her feel valued and special. She had the most radiant smile. I will always think of her and her family fondly.

So many wonderful times I shared with Mom. Her zest for life always inspired me and it will continue to carry on in my heart.

I was so excited to reconnect with one of my mom´s dearest friends and one of my favorite neighbors on Morningside Dr. We enjoyed a wonderful lunch and long afternoon reminiscing. I treasured it then and even more so now. She is such a fond part of my early years.

I worked with Edna for 20 years as her financial advisor and I ALWAYS looked forward to our talks. Not just about the market, but about the world and life in general. Edna´s inquisitive nature and personal experience always led to fun and interesting conversations. She especially loved talking about mountaineering and adventure travel, as I had done the mountaineering and she the adventure travel. She will be missed, and I am lucky to have had the privilege of getting to know her over the years.

I had heard tales of Edna for years through my friend, Steph. On one of my trips around 8 years ago, I finally got to meet her when we all went on a day trip to antique stores somewhere south around Los Gatos. One of the shops also had a lot of outdoor stuff, and Edna found a very large ceramic pot that she wanted for her garden. I started over to help her pick it up, but she's already done it -- she may have been small, but she was always mighty!

She loved the ocean. About 6 years ago we took a 2 week Caribbean cruise together. We got to see so many beautiful islands, played scrabble, saw shows, went on excursions and I even got her in a bathing suit with her toes in the sand, probably for the first time in decades. I figured at some point we would likely get sick of each other, start bickering or she would start to make me nuts but that didn't happen. We just had a good time.
