Edward Duggan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 24, 2025.
Sherborn - Edward Dennis Duggan (Ed) of Sherborn, Massachusetts passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, April 21st at the age of 82.

Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Sandra (Sandy) Duggan; his eight children, Lori Duggan, Patrice Shumaker, Amy Youngblood, John Duggan, Michael Duggan, Brian Duggan, Mary Chalifour, and Christine Mathison; their spouses, Peter Shumaker, Scot Youngblood, Colleen Duggan, Sarah Dalhoumi Duggan, Nicole Duggan, Chris Chalifour, and John Mathison; and his twenty grandchildren, Victor Figueroa, Joseph Duggan, Timothy Shumaker, Jack Shumaker, Garret Shumaker, Conor Youngblood, Anna Youngblood, Anton Youngblood, Patrick Duggan, Meaghan Duggan, Mary Bernadette Duggan, Christopher Duggan, Camille Duggan, Edward (Eds) Duggan, Caleb Duggan, Noah Duggan, Gabriel Duggan, Samuel Duggan, Julian Chalifour, and Calvin Chalifour.

Ed was born on April 11, 1943 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was a "Cambridge, Somerville boy" raised by his strong, single mother, Enola Denley.

Ed attended Boston College High School and Boston College where he studied business and played football. He was a proud double eagle. Following college, Ed served in the US Coast Guard and Coast Guard Reserve.

Ed met Sandy November 15, 1968 on a blind date at a St. Elizabeth's nursing school dance. It was love at first sight. They got married a year and a day later at Sacred Heart Church in Newton. As only children, they dreamed of having a large family together.

Ed was a faithful Catholic who brought up his children in the church and instilled values of kindness and generosity. He was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima Parish and Saint Anselm's Parish in Sudbury. He also volunteered with Knights of Columbus, the pro-life movement, and later joined the Third Order Benedictine of the Divine Will.

Ed provided for his family through his fifty-five-year career as a life insurance agent at New York Life. Ed enjoyed spending time at his children's sporting events, including hundreds of track meets, cross-country races, football games, and baseball/softball games. He was always the loudest one cheering in the stands.

Ed will be remembered as a caring son, a loving and loyal spouse, a proud father of eight, and a generous, devout Catholic.

I played on BC football team with Ed. He was a delightful teammate.Ed was a non scholarship player who played for love of the game.He stuck through it for 4 years. He was always positive and upbeat.
I saw him 11 years ago at a 1964 team reunion. He was the same Ed. Friendly, inquisitive and engaging. Ed epitomized the old BC like so many local kids with strong values who valued a good education.
I´m glad to have known him and call him a friend and teammate.

I always loved it when Ed visited my Dad and our family in Melrose. He was kind and attentive to younger people and a great role model.
My Dad, Jack Denley, Ed's step brother was so proud of Ed playing football, graduating from Boston College, and being such a good person. It is wonderful that he had such a happy marriage and big family.
May he rest in peace.

Ed had a nice tenor voice. And I will always remember him singing. "There's Something About That Name" for the pro-life group.

Ed Duggan was a wonderful man. a close friend who spent many hours in our kitchen in WAYLAND. Ed and Sandra participated in the marriage encounter weekend and as a result. Ed would encourage many couples to attend the weekend. He, with Sandra gave witness to many couples of the to the commitment to marriage, family and faith. Ed´s love for Sandra was constantly proclaimed. A wonderful man with a great sense of humor. I will miss you Ed and I am sure that you are busy with the Lord doing his work in spirit. With Love Barbara & (Phil in spirit)
