Edward Flick Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 26, 2022.
Edward Peter Flick, died Monday, July 18th, 2022, with his beloved daughter, Lisa Ann, by his side.

Eddie was a New York boy, born January 31, 1939, the second son of Joseph Flick and his wife Madeline. Along with his three brothers, Joseph, Donald and Douglas, the Bronx was his playground. His favorite childhood memory was fishing with his Father and eating fresh oysters from the carts on the shore. He loved egg cream sodas, the Coney Island roller coaster and fried clams, Western movies, chocolate-covered cherries, Irish folk ballads, Elvis, Fifties music and German Beer.

At 18, Eddie joined the Army as a Light Weapons Infantryman and became a Paratrooper. His six years of service was a highlight of his life, and he proudly wore his 82nd. Airborne hat for the rest of his days. His heart burst with pride as his two sons, David Peter and Richard Edward, and grandson, Daniel Patrick also proudly served our country.

In 1962, Eddie met the love of his life, the beautiful German immigrant Ilse Betty, while he served in Ft. Riley, Kansas. They were married 48 years and he lovingly cared for her for ten years after her debilitating stroke. He showed his children and grandchildren what "in sickness and in health" really meant, and never once complained.

As demonstrated by his words and actions, Eddie's family was the most precious thing to him. Although bone-tired, he sometimes worked three jobs to make sure there was good food on the table, Catholic school for the kids, and fun summer road trips across the country.

Eddie dreamed of a better life for his children and bravely moved his little family from New York to Texas in 1977. He became a licensed Master plumber and loyally served John Moore Services for 25 years, respected by all. He loved John and was always grateful to him for giving a shot to a talented, street-smart, industrious New Yorker. Houston became home and Eddie's knack for planting yielded every fruit tree imaginable in his backyard.

Three words to describe this man: Selfless, accepting, and giving. He judged no one and was willing to give you the shirt off his back, no questions asked or expectations in return. While not perfect, rich, or famous, his qualities made him incredibly special to so many.

Eddie was truly one of kind. Borrowing the words of Frank Sinatra:

"I've lived a life that's full

I traveled each and every highway

And more, much more than this

I did it my way."

Edward is preceded in death by the loving family he built, his devoted wife Ilse, and cherished sons David and Richard. Also preceding him are his mother, Madeline, father Joseph, stepfather Frank Jasenec, brother Douglas and nephew Dennis.

He is survived by daughter, Lisa (his "LisaBelle") and husband Lloyd, his brother, Joe and wife Edna, and his brother, Donald. He was the best Grandpa in the world to Edward Henry (Anna), Paige Elizabeth (Josh), Daniel Patrick (Eirini), and Diana Margaret. His nickname as Great-Grandfather to Grey Elisabeth, was O.G. for the "Original Grandpa." His niece, Madeline, and nephew, Joseph, held a special place in his heart. Eddie was also a caring stepfather to Deborah Meurer and Gregory Hansen (Stephanie) and their families. Lastly, he will be sorely missed by dear family friends, Terry and Tom DiDato and Michael Dudley and many extended family members including the Flick-Cruz family.

Funeral and committal services will be held at Houston National Veterans Cemetery at a later date in August 2022.

Hey Bro...
They say that it is time for me to say goodbye, but I think I would really like to remember some long ago memories instead, especially when I was 7 years old and you were 5 years old. Mom would hide her chocolate covered cherries in a closet and wouldn't share them with us. I really wanted one and she wouldn't let me have one. I was crying and you opened up with, "Come on Joey, let her keep her old cherries, we don't need the anyway. It is memories like this, when we would often fight like cats and dogs but we always knew we would always have each other's backs out on the streets when it really mattered. There are dozens of stories like this and if I was to go on, this story would never end. So I guess it is time for me to say goodbye and for you to have a safe trip up through the clouds to the other side. Say hello to all of our family members and friends who had gone before us. Just think you will not need a parachute for this trip. Love you forever and stay ready, I may need your courage on my trip.
Farewell Bro...See you soon...
Your Big Bro Joey
P.S. Many of the stories that we share are for our eyes and ears only!

The memories of when we gathered as family & friends growing up in the city will always be remembered. You were always looked at as the uncle who wanted to fun in everything you did whether it was safe or had some mysterious outcome, laughter was always what we remembered. So we feel this passage is fitting to share in remembrance:

Just close your eyes and you will see
All the memories that you have of me
Just sit and relax and you will find
I'm really there inside your mind
Don't cry for me now I'm gone
For I am in the land of song
There is no pain, there is no fear
So dry away that that silent tear
Don't think of me in the dark and cold
For here I am, no longer old
I'm in that place that that's filled with love
Know to you all as 'up above'

We will always remember.....

I have fond memories of Eddie going way back to our teenage years. . He was very handsome, charming, caring, and also rough and tough if need be. . When he enlisted in the Army, he became a paratrooper for the extra pay. We are Godparents to his brother Joey and his sister-in-law Edna´s son, Joseph. In our more mature years, I introduced him to my husband Tom, like clockwork he would send Tom wine every year for his birthday. We had a long distance relationship and Tom would always say, "Have you called Eddie to see how he is doing." We will miss him dearly. He will always be in our hearts and with us in spirit. Absent from the body, he is present with the Lord and his beautiful family that has passed before him.

We extend our heart-felt condolences to Lisa, and her family including her children, great-grandchildren, as well to his brothers, Joe, Donald and extended family members.
