Teddy Garden kindled my love of music from my days at Loretto School, Edinburgh, where he was Director of Music during my years there (1959-63). As far as he was concerned the whole school was the chapel choir - no boy could opt out by pleading inability to sing - and he drilled us so thoroughly in the choral tradition of anthems, hymns and psalms that the music has never left me. His organ recitals after chapel services covered the whole canon of the instrument, and although 'voluntary' there were few who left the chapel without listening to the end of his wonderful performances. Loretto back then was a school that gave more importance to rugby than music, but I'm ready to bet that for many of us Teddy's musical legacy from those schooldays long ago has outlasted our involvement with sport many times over. I wish and hope that he knew this. It is entirely because of Teddy that I have sung in a choir most of my adult life.

I was very sad to hear of the death of Professor Garden FRCO. I enjoyed my time as a student of his at the University of Sheffield in the 1980s. I have very fond memories of him.
Requiescat in pace.

Fondly remembered, when on the music staff of Clifton College, as an inspiration to this young singer and would-be player.
