Very sorry to hear of Dr. Gibson's death. I never met him but he inspired me greatly.

Remembering Edward and the soft way you were together...
March 16, 2013
Dear Marianne:
You know how sad I am for you at the loss of your life's companion, Edward. Such a strong and committed duo, you have actually lived a number of lives together, from high school sweethearts to the lofty heights your accomplishments have taken you, and what a shock when the music stops. I remember us all in Germany as the young subalterns and their wives learned the traditions of the Black Watch, and later as the fellows all completed their military careers and went on to different but greater and rewarding careers. Always, Edward and Marianne were involved in the most fascinating and challenging and productive years following the Black Watch years. I always wondered what you would do next. I thought Edward was brilliant, charming and capable. So sad for your loss.

Marianne and Walter,
I just heard about Ed's death and send my love and sympathies to you both.
I have many memories of your family and home at the time we moved to Vancouver, you were so hospitable to us. I loved reading about the divided pool in another person's note! What an introduction to the west coast!
You were all very special to my parents, and you were very kind to them during their illnesses, especially when you went to Germany while Mom was very ill and visited Jamie's grave, that meant so much to her. I know you, Marianne, and my Mom shared a special bond.
I remember Mom talking about Walter, she had a real soft spot for him....
We will remember Ed as a wonderful friend to our whole family.

I took one geography class with Ed Gibson and he captivated us with his passion for architecture and urban planning, and fueled the same in his students. His love for art, culture, and cities was unmistakable, and he was generous with his time despite his many projects. I'm sad to learn of his passing.

Ed was the supervisor of my MA at SFU in 1974. He was a true life-enhancer. The parties at his house were legendary--despite the divided swimming pool! He introduced me to authors, books and ideas that still shape my life. Sincerest condolences to all his family and friends. He is a great loss

Dar Marianne,
I still can't believe that Edward is not longer with us. He always seemed to have some project on the go, and I somehow assumed that we would have many more wonderful conversations in the future. My heart goes out to you and Walter Scott. My life will be forever enriched by the time spent with both of you. I said a special prayer for Edward on Friday at our Remembrance Day Ceremony - I wish he could have been there in his Black Watch uniform, to be piped down the aisle, so handsome and such a deserving Canadian to pay homage to. My love for you both will always be. I send my heartfelt condolences and much Love.

Marianne:
Kathry and I were so sorry to hear of Ed's demise. We hadn't seen you two since our visit from Calgary in the sevnties but always hoped to.
We recall your wait in Germany for Walter Scott to arrive, the deer head on the door of your German flat waiting for antlers which would announce the birth, and Ed, believing that WS would arrive before the end of the year, telling us how he was going to spend the tax rebate. As I recall, WS didn't oblige.
Love,
Dick and Kathryn Patterson

Uncle Edward played a part in many family stories I heard growing up; I also have wonderful memories of spending a summer with him and Auntie Marianne back when I was a little girl. At the time I was only seven, but he made me feel like his friend; he spent the day giving me a pet cow and the evening telling me stories. From everything I've heard and the little I remember, I know that Uncle Edward was a great man and a wonderful friend. I wish I could thank him in person for being so kind to my family. And I regret that I didn't get the opportunity to know him better. As I stroll through UBC campus, I'll be thinking of him.

Edward was truly a beautiful man and fine mentor. It was privilege to know him. I will always remember his final "lecture" at SFU,just a few weeks ago, honouring one of his former students.

It is so hard to believe Edward is not with us anymore. Marianne and Walter Scott, please know that our entire family's thoughts are with you. If there is some other place I do hope Edward has found Ben and Tharon and is recounting some old Black Watch story. I want to thank your entire family for all of your kindness to my parents over the many years and your kindness to our family. We will all miss Edward terribly.

My thoughts are with you, Mrs. Gibson and Walter. Dr. Gibson was a great employer. I enjoyed working with and Dr. Gibson for 17 years. I enjoyed listening to Dr. Gibson's stories. He was an excellent story teller and teacher.
