Edward Gruninger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 29, 2025.
Edward Leo Gruninger, Jr. passed away peacefully at home on January 28, 2025 at the age of 72. He was born on November 25, 1952 in Denver, Colorado to Edward Sr. and Ellen Gruninger. He was preceded in death by his parents, nephew Michael Hultman and niece Amy Hochevar. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years Patricia Gruninger, his sons Tim (Emily) Gruninger and Ryan (Maggie) Gruninger, sisters Patty (Mike) Hultman, Sue (Henry) Wehrdt, Cathy (Greg Brister) Hochevar and Diane (Richard) Poland, and brother-in-law Dennis (Nan) Breidenbach. Lovingly remembered by his grandchildren Owen, Ellie, Nora, Marlee & Jack Gruninger, as well as many nieces and nephews who he loved near and far.

Ed was born and raised in Denver, Colorado and attended St. Vincent de Paul grade school before graduating from Mullen High School in 1971. Upon graduation, he enrolled in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in Southern California. He dedicated three years of his life to serving our country here and abroad, including deployment to Okinawa, Japan. As a Marine Sergeant, he was awarded the "National Defense Service Medal" and "Rifle Marksman" recognition before being honorably discharged in July 1974. After returning home to Denver he met his best friend and the love of his life, Pat, whom he married in April 1976.

His passion for serving others continued when he joined the Greenwood Village (CO) Police Force. His career in law enforcement involved time with the Beloitte (WI) Police Department and Denver Sheriff's Department before landing on what would be his career capstone as a Criminal Investigator for the Denver District Attorney. It was here that Ed would tell you he found his passion. He served the at-risk adult population as a white collar criminal investigator and worked tirelessly to ensure those who preyed on the most vulnerable were brought to proper justice. He loved his fellow officers and would tell you it was an honor and true joy to serve each and every one of the people he protected.

Upon his retirement in 2007, Ed embarked on a well deserved life of leisure. This consisted of enjoying more time doing the things he loved with those he loved, especially his five grandchildren. They will always remember Grandpa's sense of humor along with his love for BBQs, fishing, Denver Broncos football, and a well manicured lawn. But most importantly, they and his entire family will always remember the love he had for each of them.

Heaven got a good one that will be dearly missed by all.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at Regis Jesuit High School Chapel, 6380 South Lewiston Way, Aurora, CO 80016 on June 28, 2025 at 2pm MST.

Just learned of Ed´s passing. He was often out very early in the morning looking for crooks trying to take advantage of, steal, from the elderly. I know his family misses him as his friends do.

It was a shock to hear about Eds passing!
I worked with him for several years at the Sheriffs Dept !
His sense of humor was incredible!
His practical jokes were some of the most well thought out works I´ve ever seen !
We lost touch with each other over the years, but I thought about him often !!
He was a good friend ! He will be missed !

I was saddened to hear of Ed's passing. He was truly a joy to work with, and his impact on our lives will not be forgotten. Ed had an incredible talent for handling elderly cases, making a difference in so many lives with his compassion and dedication.

Beyond his professionalism, Ed brought so much laughter into our workplace. I´ll always cherish the memory of him handcuffing me in the elevator and leaving me there, riding from floor to floor until I finally landed back on the 9th floor, where he finally uncuffed me. We laughed so hard during that silly stunt-it´s just one of the many wonderful memories I hold dear.
Ed was a remarkable person, and he will be greatly missed.

Fly high, buddy...

With heartfelt condolences,
Theresa Laratta

I´m so sorry to hear of Ed´s passing. Ed was a great friend and mentor to me at the DA´s Office. No one worked harder to protect elderly and at-risk adults in Denver and we had some great times working together. Rest in peace buddy.

Eddie and I played a lot of baseball together as kids. Lots of broken windows. Fond memories. Rest in peace, my friend.

Ed protected the At Risk population before it was on the radar of legislature. He was the best.
