SHAVERTOWN — Edward J. Havrilla, 80, Shavertown, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2015, at Geisinger Wyoming Medical Center.
He was born in Swoyersville, son of the late Joseph and Mary Kovach Havrilla and was a 1952 graduate of Lehman High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball.
Edward was a self-employed floor sanding and refinishing contractor and a retiree of Proctor & Gamble, Mehoopany. Always a hard worker, he continued the floor sanding business both during and after his P&G career, finally retiring and turning the business over to his son Edward in 1997.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Swoyersville and was a member of the Holy Name Society.
Edward was a devoted husband and father. He was known for his hard work ethic, attention to detail in his work, mechanical ability, teasing nature, and ability to sing and play the ukelele.
After he retired, he was happiest when he was cutting the lawn, puttering around the house, restoring his antique Ford tractor, repairing things in his workshop, tending his apple trees, making his own wine, and hunting and fishing.
He was quietly proud of his children's and grandchildren's accomplishments in their careers, schools, music and sports.
Service was part of Edward's life. He was the past president of the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department, and later a founder and past president of the Volunteer Ambulance Association. He served as an American Red Cross CPR instructor, and during the 1972 Agnes Flood he served as Red Cross disaster chairman for Jackson Township.
Edward was preceded in death by his sister, Madeline Havrilla.
Surviving is his wife of 54 years, the former Marie Bombick, at home; daughter, Susan H. Wasserott and her husband Paul, Woolwich, Maine; sons, Edward R. Havrilla and his wife, Diane, Williamsport, Dr. Michael Havrilla and his wife, Ellen, Jenkins Township; grandchildren, Daniel and Joseph Havrilla, Michael and Matthew Havrilla; sisters, Anna Wolensky and Bernadine Havrilla.
Funeral will be held at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at The Richard H. Disque Funeral Home Inc., 2940 Memorial Highway, Dallas, with funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, Swoyersville, with The Rev. Gary Mensinger officiating. Entombment will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Park, Dallas. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 5:45 pm.
The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Kovalick, nurse Karla Norris, and case manager Lisa Christensen, of Geisinger Dallas, for their care, support and thorough attention to Edward's medical care.

Mr. Havrilla refinished all of the hardwood floors in our house when we lived in Dallas. He was always a gentlemen. In his work he was a perfectionist. He worked on our floors after completing his work day in Mehoopany. Our sympathy to his family.
