Edward C. Hume (May 18 1936 - July 13, 2023)

Edward C. Hume passed away peacefully on July 13, 2023 at the age of 87. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on May 18, 1936 to Theodore Hume and Gertrude Baldwin Hume. Edward was a wonderful parent, a great friend, a runner of marathons, and a brilliant cook. He made the worlds' best Chicken Parmesan, and conjured up dangerously good brownies . He was also a celebrated accomplished screenwriter. His works include the movies "THE DAY AFTER", "SWEET HOSTAGE", "2 MINUTE WARNING", "PAROLE", "THE TERRY FOX STORY" and "COMMON GROUND". He also wrote the teleplays for such TV shows as "THE STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO", "CANNON", "BARNABY JONES" and "TOMA".

Edward Hume was a truly gifted storyteller. And he used that rare talent and passion to enlighten the world. Despite his humility, he contributed greatly to a strong and lasting peace. Edward Hume received the Humanitas prize for writing the "The Day After". It remains the most watched TV movie of all time, seen by over 100 million U.S. viewers during its initial broadcast. It was released in 35 countries and in 17 languages, and was the first American film to be released in the Soviet Union. "The Day After" was nominated for 10 Emmys and won 2; and raised awareness worldwide about the horrors of nuclear war.

Edward Hume was predeceased by his wife Suzanne Hope Canner Hume and his sisters Francie Weatherill and Jean Gillies. He is survived by his children Chris, Brian and Erika; his sisters Marian Tibbetts, and Martha Lucuis, and many nieces and nephews, as well as many adoring friends.

In the words of Nicholas Meyer, the director of "The Day After":

"There can be no doubt about the size of Earth's debt to Edward Hume."
