July 28, 1918 - Nov. 3, 2006

A memorial service for Edward Howard Marks, 88, of Springfield, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the United Presbyterian Church, 2360 Longwood Drive, in Reedsport. His loving wife of 66 years will scatter his ashes at sea at a later time.

Edward was born July 28, 1918, in Roseburg, to Harry and Mary (Cloake) Marks. He died Nov. 3, 2006.

He married Carolyn Winter Schlavin on Feb. 22, 1941, in Toledo. He joined the U.S. Army in 1944 serving in the infantry in the Philippines, Japan and Luzon. His work experience included the Gardiner sawmill and working for the Umpqua River Navigation Co., which was purchased by Bohemia Co., from which he retired in 1980.

Edward was a member of Engineers Local 701, the American Legion and Elks; was with the Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years; and was a 45-year member of the Lions Club, which awarded him the Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, crabbing, clamming and gardening. He also enjoyed traveling, having been to Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia, Fiji, South Africa, Mexico and cruised through the Panama Canal. He and his wife did lots of traveling in their Airstream trailer.

Edward is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Springfield; daughter, Anna M. Reichert and husband, Steve, of Springfield; son, Jerry E. Marks and wife, Leslie, of Beaver Creek; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Gardiner-Reedsport Lions Club, P.O. Box 24, Reedsport, OR 97467.

Aunt Carolyn,
Please accept my condolences for your loss. I know my life was better because of you and Ed. I still have fond memories of Loon Lake and that crazy Jerry and the occassional visits between families. I wish we were not so far apart physically even though we are closer spirtually. I pray all the good spirits give you comfort our prayers are with you. Love Marvin Jarvis and family
