Edward O'Neill Obituary

Published by The New Haven Register on Nov. 15, 2022.
Edward Joseph O'Neill
On November 12, 2022, Edward Joseph O'Neill of Hamden, CT, and Naples, FL, passed away at the age of 81. His memory will be cherished by his beloved family: wife, Harriet (Anderson) O'Neill; and his three children, Ryan and Kevin O'Neill and Kerry Satchwell. He was a wonderful father-in-law to Kristin (Vizvary) O'Neill and Mark Satchwell; and a loving grandfather to James O'Neill and Charlie Satchwell. Edward was born in New Haven on July 21, 1941. He was the fourth of eight children born to the late Frank and Bridget (Reynolds) O'Neill. He leaves behind his sisters, Mary McKiernan, Patricia (David) Viglione, and Nancy (David) Hainsworth. He was predeceased by his brothers, John (Joan) O'Neill, Frank (Marie) O'Neill, Thomas O'Neill, and Danny (Susan) O'Neill; as well as his brother-in-law, William McKiernan. He was the proud uncle to many nieces and nephews. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in New Haven, Edward began his career at The Yale Computer Center, eventually becoming the Associate Director. While employed full-time, he pursued his undergraduate degree at Southern Connecticut State University, attending classes in the evening after work. His mentor, the late Yale University Professor John D. Thompson, encouraged Edward to apply to graduate school at Yale, where he went on to proudly earn his Master of Public Health. He was appointed to be the President of the Health Systems Agency of South Central Connecticut. He then joined The Hospital of St. Raphael as an Administrator, and ultimately became the Corporate Vice President of Regional Affairs. He went on to serve as the Executive Director of The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Group until his retirement from Healthcare in 1999. Edward devoted his time outside of work to the service of others, volunteering for numerous charities and serving on a variety of boards. Among those he particularly cherished were The Shirley Frank Foundation, The St. Ann/Christian Union Soup Kitchen, and The Clelian Adult Day Center. He took great pride in his Irish heritage, serving for many years as a member of The Greater New Haven St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee. He was honored to serve as the Grand Marshall of the Parade in 1997. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, sense of humor, and his gifted storytelling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Saturday at 10 a.m. in St. Rita Church. Friends Are Asked To Go Directly To Church. Burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Calling hours are Friday from 4 - 8 p.m. in Sisk Brothers Funeral Home, 3105 Whitney Ave., Hamden. In lieu of flowers, contributions to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd., Branford, CT. 06405. Hi Harriet and Kerry-
I'm so sorry I didn't hear about Ed's passing until yesterday. His good sense of humor and generosity will be greatly missed by many who knew him.

I remember him best on the tennis courts at High Lane. He was always fun to play with and he was a true gentleman. I never saw him lose his temper or complain about anything. He was just a great person to know!
Warm regards, Henry and Elaine Dove

A classy , giving, fun-loving man.

Two things that stand out in my memory ... (1) how much he helped my cousin (Harriet´s brother) fight through never-ending back pain and more .... and ... (2) being my co- shopper at family reunions in Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head. We had a ball buying foods selected by as many as 23 of our fellow "Shepperds."

My sincere sympathy to Harriet and family.

Never met a nicer guy. Always a kind word. Always a nice compliment. A true gentleman and friend. Of late I would see Ed at the Playwright- always a nice firm handshake and a hearty hello. God bless you Ed.

Eddie was the essence of generosity, kindness and wisdom. It's 1998, I've arranged for the nephew an namesake of Michael Collins to visit the US for a 10 ay lecture tour hoping to raise $10,000 for the Michael Collins Foundation that assists Irish students in attending college. I'm over my head when I reach out to Eddie whose bounty of trust and friendships have no boundaries; thus over $30,000 is raised.

To quote George Bernard Shaw, "It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations."

One can only imagine how many found their way due to Eddie's "bright torch" - a man for all seasons...

Our sympathy to the O'Neill Family.

We loved Ed and thought of him and his entire family as our family. No one could tell a story or give a eulogy better than Eddie. As his friends at the BBG called him affectionately "The Fast One", he'll be missed by many but we know he's in Heaven entertaining the angels. Our hearts go out to Harriet, Ryan, Kevin and Kerry and his beloved grandsons.
