Edwin Bruyere Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun from Aug. 29 to Aug. 30, 2006.

Edwin Joseph Bruyere, Anishnabeg Sagkeeng First Nations Born May 2, 1934 - Sagkeeng First Nations Fort Alexander Indian Reserve Son of Alexander Bruyere and Sarah Kaigiwaiais Beloved son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. Edwin Joseph Bruyere was born in Sagkeeng First Nations Fort Alexander Manitoba Indian Reserve on May 2, 1934 and lived his life working with and being respectful in his Anishnabeg community. He worked outdoors, and lived a traditional Anishnabeg life, experiencing the old days and the old ways. Edwin enjoyed life and loved others deeply, and is remembered for his generosity, friendliness, and warm welcoming smile. Edwin is also remembered for his mischievous, adventurous, and fun loving nature. Although Edwin loved his community dearly, he travelled to BC to be with his sister Madelene during her illness and spent his last months offering his love, support, and care for her recovery. Edwin and Madelene enjoyed 17 months in each other's loving and helpful company. Edwin's time with his sister was precious, sacred, and beautiful. While he lived in BC he enjoyed the sky train immensely during his outings and family visits. He especially loved living with BC First Nations and respected Coast Salish Territories. Edwin Joseph Bruyere was a good Warrior, who is deeply loved and will be immensely missed but well remembered. We are grateful to have loved and had Edwin in our lives. Madelene Bruyere will host a service and farewell for Edwin Joseph Bruyere on Friday, September 1, 2006. Ceremonies are scheduled for 10:00 am in the Common Room at 1545 E. Broadway, Vancouver. Dearest Eddie,

Although I had only met a few times when I was a young child, your smiling, yet frowning, face is a vivid memory. Each time I seen you you would always say something in anishiinabe to my granny and I would be standing by like as If I knew what you's were saying. Those times are memorable because it was an absolute honor being around my elders, not only did I learn to pick up some of the language, but it made me proud to know that I can be around those who had so much to tell about their times growing up, something not too many grandchildren have the opportunity of doing. It was a time where you would see the ol timers sit and just talk about every day life, and comparing it to what it was in the ol days. Well now uncle, you will go to a heavenly place where you will re-unite with those who have since left us. To my aunt Bets, aunt Madeline and the rest of the Bruyere family, my prayers and thoughts are with you always...

Uncle i miss you so much, my heart is broken from your passing, but i am so glad to have spent your last days with you and mom. she misses you sadly but is comforted with knowing that you are not suffering anymore, and that you are with your mom and auntie Laura, and the rest of your angel brothers and sisters. me, i'm selfish and just plain hurting that you're gone, we had so much more living to do, so many more places to go, you were always such great company and eager to try new things and you made me laugh so much. i'll never forget the time you pretended that you could read the menu at the restaurant and ordered weiners, and i'll always remember you bouncing me on your knee and singing "Muggagee, Muggagee my girl" and your big smile when you would see me. you were a good son, brother, uncle, relative, friend, and Anishnabeg Warrior. Kee-youp-min, with love ...
