Edwin Gould Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 15 to Apr. 16, 2025.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Edwin Fish Gould III, known to the world as "Jed the Fish," who left us on April 14, 2025, at the age of 69. Jed died peacefully in his Pasadena, CA home after a brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer.

Jed was a trailblazing voice in alternative radio whose 34-year career at KROQ-FM transformed Southern California's music landscape. Behind his public persona as a playful provocateur was a deeply caring and creative soul who touched countless lives with his passion for music, boundless creativity, and a hysterical laugh.

Born in Orange County, California, Jed's love for radio began early. At just 16, he landed his first radio gig at KPIN-AM in Arizona, foreshadowing the rule-breaking career that would make him a legend. At the request of his father, Edwin Fish Gould II, Jed attended the University of Southern California. After obtaining a degree from USC's Annenberg School of Journalism in 1978, Jed launched himself full force into the music scene, becoming one of the most iconic and visionary radio personalities in Southern California.

Jed's afternoon drivetime show became the launching pad for countless influential artists including Depeche Mode, The Cure, Duran Duran, The Smiths, Siouxsie and the Banshees, The B-52’s, The Go-Go’s, The Pretenders, DEVO, Blondie, The Ramones, The Runaways, Oingo Boingo, The Motels, Missing Persons, Josie Cotton, The Pandoras, X, Social Distortion, Oasis, Dramarama, No Doubt, Katy Perry, The Offspring, and System of a Down. His segments like "Catch of the Day" and his nationally syndicated show "Out of Order" showcased his brilliance, irreverence, and commitment to keeping listeners on their toes. His accolades included being twice named Billboard Modern Rock Personality of the Year and one of Los Angeles' top radio personalities.

Beyond radio, Jed was a multi-faceted artist. He was an accomplished drummer even drumming live with System of a Down at a KROQ Weenie Roast performance, produced for local acts, and created "The Shimmering," a 2019 public art installation in Hollywood that reflected his creativity and love for sensory experiences.

Jed is survived by his brother Anthony Chatterton, his nephews Corey Yacco and Jake Yacco, his cousins Jock Patterson, Liz Gould, Susie Gould Martin and her husband Paul Martin, Will Gould and his husband Rusty Wood, Stephen Gould and his wife Mary Gould, John Gould, Doug Roper and his wife Julie Roper, and a family of close friends who became his chosen family throughout his remarkable life. He also leaves behind countless fans whose lives were forever changed by the sound of his voice, his laugh, and the music he introduced them to.

On and off the air, Jed lived his life boldly, unapologetically, and joyfully unfiltered. His voice will continue to echo across the airwaves, with his iconic "K-R-O-Q" still branding the station today. For his family and close friends, it's his warmth, his glee, and his love that will continue to resonate in our hearts. Jed is reunited at last with his beloved dog Alice.

In accordance with Jed's wishes, there will be no memorial service.

We will remember the ` FISH ` ! We wish to comfort his grieving saddened family: " This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one who you sent, Jesus Christ. " John 17:3. Delivered with appreciation and sympathies.

Jed was a friend and neighbor and we will miss him terribly. On Monday April 28, on my motion the Pasadena City Council adjourned its council meeting in honor of this great resident of Pasadena.

PS I´d like to send a letter to Jed´s brother Tony formally informing him of the adjournment. Does anyone have Tony´s address? Thanks!

So inspirational in so many ways. I was a huge fan of Depeche Mode, the Smiths and the Cure. He also lived life to the fullest every day. Thank you Jed for introducing some of the greatest artists in the history of music, your contribution is immeasurable. You´ve touched so many lives and will continue to inspire so many. Forever rest in peace with God by your side. Will miss your laugh and passion for music.

Jed The Fish. You will always be the best and most interesting radio personality. Back in the day when I was just a young kid, you were doing things I could never imagine. Your passion for radio and New Wave music resonated with me in such a great way. They say baseball is Amereica's favorite pastime. Well my friend I am happy to say that listening to you on KROQ was my favorite pastime.

There will never be another great like you. Rest easy my friend.

I was honored to be at this event with you and the other KROQ greats in May 2023 at Fairplex during an 80's KROQ event at the LA County Fair. Unfortunately it was the last time I got to visit with you.
