Edwin K. (Ned) Thurston, 91 of Caldwell, died on November 4, 2013, at a local hospital of natural causes. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday November 27, 2013 at Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. Memories and condolences may be shared at www.dakanfuneralchapel.com
Ned was born August 21, 1922, in Payette, Idaho, a son of Ralph and Emily Thurston and a brother of Mary Thurston (Trigueiro). He attended Payette schools, graduating from Payette High School in 1939. He received his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Idaho in 1947. Ned spent two years in the Navy from 1944-1946. After college he met his wife, Lorene Bales, on a blind date and they were married November 9, 1947 in Caldwell.
Ned and Lorene lived in Tungsten, Nevada where he worked in mining for a short time. When they returned to Caldwell in June 1948, Ned worked in building with his father-in-law, J.F. Bales, for a time and later worked with him at Bales Lumber where Ned eventually became the owner and manager. After 39 years in the lumber business he retired in 1987.
Ned was an active member of St. David's Episcopal Church for many years, Caldwell Shrine Club, and a Greeter in the Boise Shrine as well as a member of the Scottish Rite in the 32rd degree. He was a member of Sigma Chi and also a member of the Caldwell Elks.
Ned's interests included gardening, camping, history, and he was well known for his abilities as a wood craftsman. He will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by a son, Stephen Thurston and wife, Kitty of Greenwood, SC; his two grandchildren, Doug Thurston and wife, Olivia of Charlotte, SC and Stephanie Thurston of Atlanta, GA; his daughter, Nancy Thurston and her husband, Jeff Terry of Boise.
Memorials may be made to the Shriner's Hospital for Children, Fairfax Road, at Virginia St. Salt Lake City, UT 844103; or a charity of your choice.
