Effie Schulman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2010.
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of ourmother, Effie Leona Schulman at age 88, known to her friends asLeona. Leona was the second oldest of four children born to Dewitt and Lois O'Toole on November 2, 1921. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Joseph Schulman (January 12th, 1996) and is survived by her siblings Celeste Wood, James O'Toole and Ralph O'Toole. Also left to cherish her memory are her four children, Charlene Myers, Sharon Muller, Jack Schulman and Deborah Johannes, who collectively blessed her with 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, all of whom will deeply miss their Nana. Leona was born in Arkansas and raised in Kennett Missouri. She came to California in August 15th, 1944 where she met the love of her life, Joseph Schulman later that year at D 'Angeles dance studio in Pasadena. They were married in 1947 and together raised four children in East Pasadena. Known as an outstanding cook who could work miracles in her tiny 3x6 kitchen, she shared her prowess in the kitchen with school children by serving as a dietician of sorts, and oversaw food production and quality management at many elementary schools for Pasadena Unified School District Food Services for 25 years where she was honored several times as "Manager of the Year". In the mid-nineties she combined her generous spirit and culinary expertise through the creation of "My Mom's Irish Salad Dressing" which was her original recipe that was sold to raise funds for her son-in-law, Patrick Johannes', Olympic training. She also enjoyed crocheting, gifting friends and family with her lovely handmade creations, leaving us with lasting heirlooms to treasure always. A celebration of Leona's life will be held on August 23, 2010, 10:00 am, at Cabot and Sons Funeral Home, 300 North Fair Oaks, Pasadena followed by a grave side internment service at Rose Hills, Whittier. >Leona's favorite color was yellow and guests are encouraged to wear yellow in honor of Leona's brilliant and glowing spirit. Donationscan be made in her honor to the American Heart Association.
