Egils V. Liepa

May 17, 1921 - June 3, 2012 Passed away peacefully in the hospital, age 91. Beloved husband to Edith for almost 63 years; survived by children Peter (Desirée), Bob (Soon), Dagmar (Dan) and Ingrid; grandsons Jason and Rio; and sister Aija. Father and husband, physician, lifelong avid reader, book and art collector, medical historian, sailor, kitchen gardener, beekeeper, bookbinder, and traveller. Egils, whose name was inspired by an Icelandic saga, was born in Latvia to a school principal and a teacher. He often reflected on the good luck in his life, where seeming misfortunes later turned out to be blessings in disguise, especially in the turmoil during and after the war in Europe. In 1951, after studying medicine in Germany, he emigrated to Canada with his wife Edith. He interned at the Ottawa Civic Hospital where he eventually became the head of pathology. Over the years he liked to rejuvenate at the family cottage on Lake Pemichangan, planting fruit trees, tending his bees, building stone walls and stairs, making bonfires. In later life he visited Latvia frequently and proudly showed the country of his youth to his family. There will be no public visitation or services. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. His family wishes to thank the many caregivers that gave him comfort in his final days and weeks. In Latvian folklore he is now Aizsaule (Beyond the Sun). Dad, we are grateful for everything and will remember you always.
