Not sure what to say?

I just recently became aware of Egon's passing. Even though we're near the anniversary, I'd like to extend my condolences especially to you Phyllis, but also to his closest friends and family. I knew Egon primarily through my late father Bruce Marshall, but also through The San Antonio Scottish Society and Scots of Austin. He and my father were good friends as they were so much alike. They were unique individualists and reviled sameness. You knew where they stood, yet that was part of what made them great conversationalists. My dad once said, "Never get in an argument with a priest or a librarian--they know it all." Knowing something about almost every subject, Egon and my dad were high priests. They both were in the SCV, free-thinkers, saw Ayn Rand speak in person, were both Son's of the South, walking encyclopedias and knew the importance of preserving our rich heritage. Respected as uncompromising men.

Although strong opinions often lead to rows, I'd like to say that after knowing Egon and my dad, at some point I coined my own phrase--that, "a man without opinions isn't really a man." And later, real men of God are known by their enemies. Let it never be said or engraved--that, "everyone loved him." When the Tausch's lived in the King William district, men like Egon didn't call 911, they met the house thief on the front porch.

Egon carried the heavy burden of war. "We all died a little in 'THAT' Damned War" spoken of in The Outlaw Josey Wales, liked to kill Egon. But just as Joel 2:25 promises, God had a new lease for Egon. I knew Egon prior to his conversion to Christ and prior to him meeting and marrying his wonderful and patient Phyllis. Although none is perfect, I saw the change, the peace, and the dominion Egon had over the "old man". Phyllis came into his life at the right time and was a true biblical "help meet" and defender. Always there at his side, in health and weakness.

"The examined life is not worth living" and Egon took a road less traveled. Deo Vindice, Blessings and Pax Christi to you Phyllis. Randy Marshall & the Marshall family of Oklahoma.

I opened the Bar Journal to find the shocking news of Egon's passing. I have never met his equal and always enjoyed his company. How this loss must wound his family as it certainly does his friends. Eternal peace, my friend.

Egon and Phyllis have been such good friends from the day that I came to know them in 1994. From there, I spent hours and days talking to him about every subject under the sun, politics, law, philosophy and religion, while Phyllis acted as his brakes, always making sure he did the right thing. As he grew older and wiser, he still took time to keep an eye out for me, such as meeting my fiancé before I married her, and attending our wedding, along with many other dear friends. In many moments, I helped him write, and in others, I would be caught between his many strengths and weaknesses, who was talking to whom and not. Often, we would not speak for months over an issue or actual slight, but I have to give it to Egon, that except for one long-lost friend from my youth, he is the one and only man to approach me and ask for forgiveness for doing something wrong. After that, and that had to have been more than 10 years ago, I was totally hooked to ensure he enjoyed what he could of his life, along with Phyllis, and ensure that he had only positive contributions from me. Up to that point, I always won any argument with him, except where knowledge and experience were superior, which helped forge my own respect for truth in ways that no other friend or person could have done. His reputation followed him, such as a conversation I had with an Orthodox monk at Holy Archangels about Egon and his wife, showing that wherever they went, they were noticed and evoked respect. Even when he stood up for one of the last times in his life in an Austin courtroom to testify on behalf of never erasing historical statues from the University of Texas campus, here was a man who could inspire with intellect and bravery. I also found out through many discussions that he was never averse to radical ideas, such as actually knowing Ayn Rand and her entire inner circle in the early 1960's, and despite his Christian beliefs, following Murray Rothboard in some ways, considered himself to be a follower, but also held himself to be a Southerner and a warrior. In that respect, he held onto all three roles until his last days. I am sorry that I did not take him to the cleaners more on the last poker game we had in 2017, but thoroughly enjoyed the many visits, calls and the stays at our house, a life they both spent seeking to do the right thing. We also finally had the time just two years ago to have that long chat we needed about what it means to lives as a gentleman, why he became a Christian, and what worth life has. We will miss him, a man who was much more than a powerful symbol of a mighty cathedral, but as an ordinary man who never chose to be average. He was my forge. My best to Phyllis, his beloved wife, and our family will stay in touch as much as she needs and desires.

I knew him as Ricky, and first met him and Clementine in the early sixties, as I was a friend of their fathers. Years later I married his father, and so I became Rickys stepmother, as well as stepmother to Clementine and step-grandmother to Clementines children, Laura and Roland. Into our marriage were born twins Frederika and Liesebet Tausch, Ricky and Clementines half-sisters. Later Lauras daughter, Chrystina, joined the family. I enjoyed the time I spent around Ricky (as long as I did not contradict him, which was no temptation), although playing Scrabble with him was, well, exhausting. He always won, of course. He was brilliant and funny and a talented artist and singer. He was very fortunate to have found his soulmate in Phyllis, who loved him and cared for him. He could be difficult, but Phyllis always knew how to calm him, and he loved her dearly.

I am so sorry that I didn't get to know Egon better. What a true friend of the South and one we will greatly miss. God bless you with his peace knowing that Egon is visiting with Lee and Jackson at this very moment while worshiping the King of Kings.

My prayers are with you, Phyllis in the death of my friend, Egon. It has been some time since we have seen each other, but you two have always been in my prayers. I know Egon is a special addition to the heavenly body. I am sorry I cannot attend the viewing or funeral, since I am currently home bound with COPD. You can be assured, however, that I will be there in spirit. May God's blessing rain down upon you to bring you peace.

I will not let this be a time to mourn but a time to rejoice that my Uncle Ricky has shed all his pain and burdens because in the lyrics of a song some years back "Life is just a stepping stone to all eternity - what a family reunion it will be" and right now he is in the middle of the greatest family reunion of all. Pain for him has past and has been replaced with a joy we cannot fully grasp yet but will when we join our family up there some day. And some day I will get to see him, and my grandmother Francis and my grandfather, Papis, the rest, and my great uncle, good ole' Uncle Dick too. For so many years I have mourned the loss of my family members and miss my days on the Ranch with all of them. But I know there is an even better ranch ahead of me because Billy Graham calls Heaven "A better country", and I look forward to that country and the beauty of it and that stunning reunion I will get to experience. Ricky right now is whole again, more whole than the limitations that this place down here could ever allow.

God Bless,

Phyllis: I'm so sorry to learn the news of Egon's passing, but I trust in full confidence he's in fine company in Heaven. I shared the news with my mother when I saw her yesterday. I pray that Egon uses his charm and wit to open the door for the rest of us!

Blessings from the Marshall family,
