In memory of
Mary Jude Szymanski
January 31, 2019
The first time I met Elaine was when the Disney video crew was taping her for her Teacher of the Year video to be shown at the awards program. I was the assigned liaison between the crew and the District. That taping was the beginning of a great friendship. I am sooo sorry I am just seeing this now. I will miss our interaction and our working together to fulfill our mission. Right now, I especially miss our end of the year Chinese Dinner with Ling and Yu and all of our Teachers of Chinese Through Interactive TV lessons. What a wonderful program. You and I always had our own private toast at those dinners. Rest easy, Elaine. I will toast us this evening.

I was not one of Dr. Baer's students per se. I worked in the Foreign Language department office when I didn't have class and would run copies and other errands for teachers in the department. Dr. Baer was always positive, professional, caring and supportive, especially while I attempted to speak Spanish with her, Mr. Lavner (who was my teacher for all 3 years of my time at Bartram Main), Mrs. Jay, and Mrs Batistini. My heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of this dear lady. Rest in Paradise, Dr. Baer.

She taught my father (an inner city kid) to speak fluent Spanish. She taught my sister and me 30 plus years later. Dr. Baer was the best.

Elaine left a wonderful legacy, and touched the lives of so many people, she also set high standards for teaching. She will be missed.

On behalf of the family of Patricio Concha, I'd like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family of Elaine Baer. Together my father and Elaine worked side by side for decades to champion and advance the profession of World Language Education in Philadelphia. They were colleagues but they also became lifelong dear friends. Elaine was like an extension of our family and her loss is felt deeply in our hearts. She lives on in the memory of every student and teacher she helped inspire and in the passion of the next generation of world language educators. May she rest in peace. The world has been a better place because of the gifts she has shared through her love and her work.

Mrs. Baer was such a marvelous teacher and mentor during my years at John Bartram High School. She
was the one person in my life who encouraged and supported my love of foreign languages. Her upbeat and
positive personality was a joy to see each day, and I had the pleasure of working for her as an aide and office assistant. What a blessing and priviledge to have known such a briliant woman.

Aunt Elaine, mentor, teacher with ability to communicate with anyone in their language Spanish, French, German, Italian, Hebrew, Yiddish.
We would listen and learn from her words of wisdom. She inspired all of us with abundance of love, passion and living life to its fullest.
Grateful to have traveled life's journey together, her memory is a blessing.
As Elaine would say, "on ward and up ward"

So very saddened by Elaine's passing. We taught together in the foreign language department at Bartram High and remained good friends for many years. Elaine was a great teacher and fine person. Her sense of humor, love of travel, and superior intellect were memorable. Elaine was a unique personality who has left her mark on so many. She accomplished so many goals and leaves behind wonderful memories to those fortunate enough to have known her. Marvin Ginsburg

I was a junior/senior at Bartram taking Spanish and was lucky enough to have Ms.Baer start teaching Spanish. She was wonderful! She let me be a part of a play for the school (Bartram). I was playing a tourist in a railway station in Spain. A sign in Spanish clearly said "No sacar photographias. Not knowing Spanish, I tried to take a photo and was arrested! I will never forget these lines and will forever remember Mrs. Baer and her skills as a teacher and guidance consultantant. She has been remembered as a pillar through my 82 yrs of life. Danced a dance with her in 2005 at our 50th reunion.

My condolences to Elaine's family. She was a champion for foreign language teachers, students, and programs. Her enthusiasm for and love of learning languages was contagious to all who came in contact with her. " Job well done; good and faithful servant." You surely will be missed by many.

So much has been said about Elaine, yet there is more. She was a teacher's teacher, an educator's educator. She championed public education and with passion and dedication took up the gauntlet against those who did not share her belief that all children should have the opportunity to learn, achieve and aspire to be their best.
To her family: I share your sorrow and will miss her but those of us who Elaine has taught, nurtured, guided and mentored hold her spirit within.

Elaine was the eternal teacher, the conscience and the grammarian of our editing board at PASE. As one of the founders of PASE she looked out for the rest of the teachers who came after her. It was a pleasure to speak to her and to discuss any subject. She took citizenship seriously and was an avid democrat all her life. Life for her was to be enjoyed and she loved traveling to distant places. An opera lover, she described the timber of voice of her favorite stars. I will miss her zest for living, her interesting stories and most of all, her friendship. There will always be a place in my heart for her. Descansa en paz, querida.

My mother worked in the foreign language department, under Aunt Elaine's advisement, at Bartram. There has never been a time in my life that Aunt Elaine was not there. She was an Aunt, a friend, a cousin, a sister, a mentor, and all around
wonderful person. She achieved many amazing things throughout her life and will be greatly missed. Our condolences to her family and friends.

Mrs Baer was my Spanish teacher way back in the late 50s and early 60s. Her inspiration made us all love Spanish! And she helped me so much with some personal problems. I had the privilege of having lunch with her a few years ago along with some other students. And she came to our 50th Class Reunion. She was very smart and very kind and so much fun. I loved that she traveled so much and was so engaged with the world. Her family should know that she was a positive force for good and education for her whole life. And she was a lot of fun!

When asked to name a favorite teacher I always name Mrs. Baer. She made my days at Bartram in Spanish class fun as well as educational. I am so thankful she attended our 50th class reunion 5 years ago and I was able to spend some quality time visiting with her. I feel better for having known her. My sincere condolences to her family.

Elaine Baer was my "inspiration and role model." She as an outstanding friend and advisor, I loved talking to her both about our mutual memories and events of the day. Whenever I ran a meeting for the Department (after her retirement), I always asked myself "What would Elaine do?" I will miss her every day now more than ever. Reena Sumerson

Mrs. Baer was not only a stellar educator but a warm, friendly and personalbe human being who had the welfare of her students at heart. Her Spanish classes were something to look forward to. My days at Bartram were enhanced by her humor and instruction. I recall fondly her bright smile and greeting as she would pass students in the hall as well as in class.
My condolences to her loved ones.
Adios, Senora Baer!
