Eleanor H. Black
Eleanor H. Black, formerly of Millerstown and Liverpool, died December 15, 2007 at The Manor at Perry Village, where she had resided since the fall of 2002.
She was born January 1, 1905 in Juniata, Blair County, to the late William and Henrietta Bratton Thompson. She moved at age nine to Perry County to live with her maternal grandmother, Mary Donnally Bratton.
She married Jonathan R. Black in 1928. Jonathan died in 1937. She was the next to the oldest of seven children and was predeceased by sisters, Mary Wineland, Rosanna Ebersole and Jean Thompson, and brothers, William, Logan and Leonard Thompson.
Eleanor graduated from Millerstown High School in 1923. She taught grades one through eight in various one-room schools for five terms and pursued further education at Penn State University during summer vacations. She returned to teaching in the early 40's and retired from Greenwood School District in 1968. For the last 14 years of her career, she taught first grade students.
She was a member of Highland Presbyterian Church, and previously the First Presbyterian Church of Millerstown, where she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.
Surviving are five daughters, Dolores Latsha (Larry) of Mechanicsburg, Mary Joyce Miller (Amos) of Millerstown, Jessie Zink of Liverpool, Beverly McMaster and Kay McDonald (Richard) of Mechanicsburg; seven grandchildren, Michael Brookhart, John and Jeffrey Miller, Steve Lower and Brenda Cumberledge, Douglas McDonald and Marybeth Hummel; 13 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Keith Lower in 1979.
Following private graveside service, burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Millerstown. There will be no viewing. A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 22nd at 11 a.m. at the Highland Presbyterian Church, Newport.
Contributions in Eleanor's honor may be made to Highland Presbyterian Church building fund, 11 Church Road, Newport, PA 17074; or to The Manor at Perry Village activity fund, 213 E. Main Street, New Bloomfield, PA 17068.
