Eleanor Burns Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 27, 2004.
Eleanor Braun Burns, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, in Duluth. Eleanor was a dancer, writer, poet and painter of rocks. She began her 50 years of dance training and performance under the Arthur Murray Dance Studio. Prior to that she worked as a waitress at the Holland Hotel during the depression and was chosen to represent Duluth in the national competition for Miss America Hotel Girl, sponsored by the American Hotel Association in 1949. During the 1960's she wrote, illustrated and published a guide to ballroom dancing entitled, 'Together We Dance.' She taught dance at UMD's physical education department in 1967-'68. She went on from there to teach the Rumba, Fox Trot, Swing, Tango, Waltz, and other Latin & American ballroom dances through the Community Education Program. She was voted 'Teacher of the Year' in 1992. Her last performance was in 2003, at St. Ann's Residence with her long time dance partner and friend Dale Lundstrom. Wherever there was a dance in town you would find Eleanor, Dale and Mary Katzmarek, her other long time dance associate and friend. Writing, her second love came naturally to her. As she would say, 'Words, like dance should flow from the mind without hesitation and in smooth coordination.' Eleanor has written information articles for magazines including Relics out of Austin, Texas, our local Senior Reporter and Ports Cities Magazine (now Lake Superior Magazine). She wrote and published 'A Widow's Dilemma' in 1995, dedicating it to her second husband Dr. Earl J. Burns when he passed away unexpectedly. Her final publication was her 350 page autobiography titled 'Dance, Dance, Dance-Cars and Chance' although she continued to tell everyone she was working on her sequel. Her inspiration for writing, poetry, and painting comes from living on Duluth's Park Point peninsula where she would walk the beach selecting smooth surface basalt rocks that washed up on Lake Superior's shoreline. Eleanor would paint many of the cities' attractions on the rocks, glue a magnet on the back and bring a set down to Grandma's Marketplace for sale in Canal Park. In 1985, she published 'Poetic History of Duluth and It's Neighbors', which featured her poetry and photos of the rocks that she painted. She also published her poetry titled, 'House on a Sand Heap.' Her professional affiliations include a twenty year post as treasurer for two Minnesota poetry groups: the Arrowhead Poetry Society of Duluth and the League of Minnesota Poets. She was also a President of the Duluth Manuscript Club, one of whose charter members was Margaret Culkin Banning. Eleanor was actively involved in the Twin Ports community with a busy schedule that included bowling leagues in Duluth and Superior, golfing as a member of the Nemadji Lady's Golf Club. She was a member of the Superior Women's Club, the Lady Elks of Superior, the Edward Braun American Legion Auxiliary, Theta Sigma Nu sorority and a life long member of St. Andrews by the Lake Episcopal Church on Park Point. Eleanor enjoyed a rich personal life in Duluth living on Park Point since 1936. She graduated from Denfeld High School in 1932, and attending the University of Minnesota for two years. She has one son, Richard from her first husband, Edward Walter Braun and a daughter-in-law, Nancy Nyquist Braun. Eleanor has three granddaughters, Victoria Dawn Braun, Nichole Anissa Braun and Shanda Anneke Braun, two great-grandchildren, Trenton and Sydney Lyden, two nieces, Bonita Drummond, and Debbie Ramous and a nephew, Butch Benniwise. She was a widow for 10 years before marrying her second husband, Dr. Earl J. Burns. The Burns-Curry family from Horicon, Wis. enjoyed the many visits that occured over the years where Eleanor had a profound influence on the children of her sister-in-law Margaret and her husband Budford. Lisa, Ellen, Jon, Rick, Jill and Jeff, all have many stories and fond memories of their aunt Eleanor. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Radig and a sister, Dorothy Cambell. She is survived by a half-sister, Gwen Fredrickson, a sister-in-law, Betty Radig, a sister-in-law, Anita Burns and a cousin Bernice Lindquist. Dear Family of Eleanor,

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Eleanor was a friend of our family. My parents were Floyd & Betty Miller who lived here in Duluth, MN, my fathers brother was Ray & Gigi Miller from Niles, CA. My wife and I took dance lessons from Eleanor and reminised about the past and how small this world really is. One time when we were visiting my Aunt and Uncle in CA, Eleanor was there also visiting. Who would think you would run into people from home when you are miles from Duluth. Both my parents and and my Aunt and Uncle are all gone now, at least they will see each other once again, and who knows, they maybe dancing on the clouds of heaven.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With Love, Kevin & Pam Miller

Dear Family of Eleanor,

We are so sorry to hear of your loss. Eleanor was one of the first people we met when we came to St. Andrews. She always made us feel welcome and we all loved to sit with her and listen to her wonderful stories..Although we have moved from Duluth , we hold Duluth and the special people we met there deep in our hearts.. Eleanor was one of those special people. We know she is teaching the angels to dance.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

With Love, The Pritz's ( Thom, Jane, Hannah and Tommy )
