Eleni kontis was one of the first people I met when my family moved to Pittsburgh. She gave me a treasured view of the city that I will never forget. As we drove throughout Pittsburgh, I was able to see the city through her eyes as she taught me about the events and historical places that have shaped this historical and revitalized city. We shared a love for art and architecture that she helped me find in this new home. I was astounded by her knowledge of literature and history, which expanded beyond the bounds of her traditional education. Her intellectual curiosity continued to inspire me. She told me stories about her life as a young girl in Athens during the German occupation of Greece and later her experiences as an immigrant to the United States during the late 1940s and 1950s. Her life and account of her experiences were not only a source of immense historical knowledge, but also one of inspiration, struggle, and triumph. Her generosity, sensitivity, and love for life and others will always stay with me.

Not a day goes by that I don´t say a prayer for your mom. She was an inspiration and touched me deeply. Her brilliant personality and generosity was outstanding. Her Greek pastries indescribably the best I ever experienced. She was my friend and shared such intimate conversations with me. I will never forget her for as long as I live. I loved her.
