Elijah Cunningham Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2024.
Elijah Carl Cunningham, 24, went into the loving arms of Jesus on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 8, 1999 to Paul Cunningham and Lisa (Miner) Cunningham. His family and friends called him Eli.

Eli attended Green Park Lutheran Grade School and Lutheran South High School, class of 2017. He graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2021 from Missouri University of Science and Technology with a degree in chemical engineering.

His family and friends valued his loyalty, strong work ethic, service, caring heart and wit. Known for being on the quiet side, Eli was fiercely determined, observant, diligent and thoughtful. He listened to classic rock and enjoyed hunting, movies, hitting golf balls, sand volleyball, softball and shooting pool. He spent hours online playing video games with cousins who lived out of state.

Eli embraced the opportunity to try something new, whether teaching himself the guitar, learning Brazilian jiu-jitsu, chess or riding a motorcycle. In 2023 he moved to Memphis where he enjoyed a new job as a production engineer at Mitsubishi Chemical.

We could always rely on his chef talents and voracious appetite. As a kid he made lunch for his brothers - grilled cheese was his specialty - and over the years mastered beef Wellington for the holidays. He had the ability to clean his plate like no other, and made it a point to try new foods at every chance. He was a lover of grandma's pretzels and his beer of choice was Busch Light.

Beta Sigma Psi fraternity was his home during college. There he served in a variety of leadership positions including as "steward" where his culinary skills came in handy and his promises of delicious soup were made real. Considered "wicked smart" by so many in his life, Eli was also scholarship chair and supported the brothers in their academics and with mentoring.

Eli was fortunate to have many friends. Among them since childhood are Mitchel and Carl who will fondly remember him for being a truly good and loyal friend. They knew he could be counted on to be a wonderful listener, winning chess player, furniture mover and someone who would help with physics homework for the low price of a cheeseburger in return. In college he met Elliott who together they played in the Beta Sigma Psi band and loved playing 90s rock on their guitars. Eli was best man at Elliot's wedding.

Eli was loved and adored beyond measure by his family. He thrived spending time with grandparents, aunts and uncles and happy hours were best spent with Grandpa Keith on the front porch sipping bourbon. But the real magic happened when he and his beloved cousins were together. He was always down for a whiffle ball game, watching movies and tubing at the lake. Family vacations, where he had a near-permanent grin on his face, will forever be core memories and a highlight of our lives.

Brothers Luke, Gabe and Eli had an exceptional bond. It's nearly impossible to say one of their names without also saying Eli's. They challenged and supported one another, made their own mischief and further linked themselves with matching tattoos. He proudly welcomed his new sister-in-law and niece to the family last year and was warmly anticipating the arrival of a nephew this April. Together the Cunningham three provided their mother with so much love, care and respect.

Eli left the world entirely too soon and is confidently with Jesus. Those who love him are better for it and will keep his memory alive.

A celebration of life to honor Eli will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church 5252 S. Lindbergh Blvd., St Louis, MO. Visitation from 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.; memorial service at 11. Luncheon to follow on-site. The family is establishing a scholarship in Eli's memory that will support the academic success of the members of Eli's fraternity, Beta Sigma Psi - Eta Chapter. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation via check to Lisa Cunningham, 3886 Tahquitz Drive, St. Louis, MO 63125 or Venmo @LisaMinerCunningham.

I was lucky enough to go to grade school, high school and church with Eli. Eli was a good friend of mine. When we were younger we went on a mission trip and I remember Eli and Mitchell sitting behind me in the van. I remember repeatedly telling the boys that I had to go to the bathroom at the next stop. I had my shoes under the seat of the van and when we got to the gas station I leaned over quickly to grab my shoes and those two boys tied them together. They were both goof balls and always messing with me. I will always remember the parties at Ashley´s with him. He was kind to everyone and always made us laugh. I remember in college calling him all the time to help me with my math homework. He was so loyal and would always answer and help me until I got it done. He was so incredibly smart. I remember after college I took him skiing for the first time and he fell pretty bad the first couple times going down but that´s what I loved about Eli he kept wanting to learn. After that night he wanted to go again although we never got the chance to go. I miss nights where we would get dinner either just us at Smokey Moes or going out with our sand volleyball team. Eli was the captain of our sand volleyball team. We would always cheer for him as big E or big dog. This summer truly won´t be the same without him. We would go to the games early just to all hangout with each other and talk about our weeks. Eli you were so incredibly loved and are deeply missed. Thanks for being such a wonderful friend to me.

I remember interviewing Elijah for his new job. It was the first time I'd met him. In just a few minutes, I knew he was the right person for the job. We'll miss him so much.

Eli was a colleague in Bayer. He was a very helpful person in work and a very fun person outside work. The photo is he riding in a big farming vehicle last year in the Farm Progress Show in Illinois 2023.

Eli was my neighbor in Memphis. While I did not know him personally, I saw him in passing pretty frequently. I had brief moments of speaking with him and now wish I had more opportunities to get to know him better. He seemed very loved. Sending all my love to his friends and family. Rest easy, Elijah.

Eli,
I will always remember your smile. You had the sweetest and purest smile. My favorite memory is when you, ash, Carl, holly, and I made the trip to elephant rocks. We were like kids. I´m pretty sure we even played sharks and Minos? We were 22 and 23 at that time. It was so fun. I remember laying on the rocks and your smile was so big and perfect, I had to capture it on camera. That photo is still one of my favorites to this day.

Another favorite: New Year´s Day we all woke up starving. We wanted sandwiches and left not realizing that a lot of places would be closed for the new year so we drove all the way to crown candy only for it to be closed. I believe we drove to a second location which was also closed, before finally landing on 9th street deli. We shared so many laughs at that little deli and we didn´t know it at the time but soon holly and I would be moving in to an apartment a few blocks over, which you would help move us in to. You were always a reliable friend and genuinely good human. You will be incredibly missed. We will always remember you.

My favorite memory with Eli was when he was my date to our senior year Homecoming at Lutheran South! He asked me by spelling out "HC?" using post it notes on my car. We had a really great time! He was a thoughtful and kind friend.

Eli was the captain of our sand volleyball team the last two summers. Our best points were usually ones where Eli would have the ball set to him to spike it down on the other team, which was always followed by us all yelling, "Let´s go, Eli!" or "Yes, Eli!" or even sometimes, "Nice one, big dog!" I miss those matches with him, and especially the times before and after games - just sitting around, having a drink, and talking about each other´s lives.
He was kind, deep, loyal, incredibly smart, and (as Ashley mentioned in one of these posts) had a hilarious dry humor. We´ll always remember him.

I was lucky enough to go to high school and college with Eli and loved getting to see a familiar face on campus in rolla. I also appreciate the fun stories Alex loves to tell about Eli from high school. We are absolutely heartbroken and will always remember Eli

A place that reminds me of Eli is my basement! I used to always have people over in college & after college, and Eli was faithfully at every party. I will always picture him sitting at our bar stools. He was the best to be around, kind, respectful and up for a good time. One of my favorite memories is when we supplied everyone free beer and I think it was Bud Light. He said something like "Do you have anything better than this?" We all cracked up! He had the best dry humor and delivery and I will always miss that. We all love you so much Eli and you are missed more than you know.
