Elise Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 17, 2024.
Elise Nesselhauf Davis, of Chatham Township, NJ, was born on June 26, 1926 and died on October 19, 2024. She was 98 years old.

She grew up in Garden City, NY and attended college at Centenary University. She worked at Sperry Corporation (now Unisys) during World War II on projects that required special national security clearances. She met the love of her life Herbert J. Davis while in high school and married him following his graduation from college. They were an extremely close couple, and their devoted relationship was the centerpiece of their lives. Their greatest accomplishment and joy was raising a family together. They had four children: Conn, Meredith, Glenn and Martha. They spent their entire adult lives in Chatham Township, NJ but also loved spending long visits with their children residing in St. Thomas, San Diego, Houston and New Jersey.

Elise was artistic, athletic and intelligent. She was an expert gardener, competitively arranged flowers, and her front lawn in spring was a well-known local site with hundreds of daffodils blooming street side. Elise and her husband Herb were avid swimmers, and they loved the ocean at Jones Beach. Elise was a lover of nature and a dedicated advocate for the environment. Her efforts played an important role in preventing a development project that would have negatively impacted the Great Swamp Wetland Preserve in New Jersey.

Elise spent her final years at an assisted living facility in Hanover, NJ. She was accompanied by her devoted caregivers, Vida Kwayisi and Charlotte Jagri who helped maintain Elise's enjoyment and quality of life. She was socially active and a favorite among the care facility residents and staff.

Her father, Albert Nesselhauf and mother, Louise Nesselhauf predeceased her, as did her brother Webster Nesselhauf and sister Doris Nesselhauf Davies. She is survived by her children Conn Davis Sr. and his wife Debi Davis, Meredith Grimm Sobol and her husband Robert E. Sobol, Glenn Davis, Martha Davis Mangold and her husband Russell Mangold; grandchildren Rachel Davis, Conn Davis Jr., Hannah Jeter and her husband Derek Jeter, Paul Grimm, Victoria Grimm, Kyle Mangold, Leah Mangold; and great grandchildren Christian Davis, Bella, Story, River and Kaius Jeter; and nephew Scott Davies.

Her gracious and appealing spirit touched everyone she met, and she will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her.
