Elizabeth "Betsy" Anne Ripley Bogel

June 13, 1929 - March 8, 2025

Betsy died March 8, 2025, from natural causes. She lived a remarkable life and was a deeply loved daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandmother, and great grandmother.

Betsy was born in New York City, spent her childhood in South Salem/Truesdale Lake, NY, and moved to Burlingame, CA, in 1940. Betsy graduated from Burlingame High School in 1946, attended San Mateo Junior College and graduated in 1948, and continued her education at Stanford University graduating in 1950 with a BA and MA in English and Education. While attending San Mateo JC, Betsy met the love of her life, Ken Bogel, and the couple married August 13, 1950. Ken and Betsy were married for 64 years. Ken passed in 2014.

Betsy was active in many civic and social causes throughout her life. Activities included local school PTA Associations, AAUW, San Mateo County Historical Association, Cub, Boy and Girl Scouting, Teaching Aide at Aragon High School, Church leadership and Deaconess, and serving on several juries and grand juries. Betsy especially enjoyed her time with the San Mateo County Historical Association forming the "History Buffs" organization and teaching school children about the history of local Ohlone Tribe culture.

Ken and Betsy enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with family during their retirement years.

Betsy is survived by her three children and their families: Paul Bogel (Ann Smith) from Renton, WA, Steve Bogel (Lisa) from Benicia, CA, and Kathy Shiokari (Ken) from Pacifica, CA. She leaves behind ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Betsy was a beloved Mom, Mee Maw, Nonnie, and Great Grandma.

A memorial service will be held at 1PM, Saturday, May 17, 2025, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Burlingame, CA. All are welcome to come and celebrate Betsy's life.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to two of Betsy's favorite organizations would be appreciated: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Burlingame, CA, or the San Mateo County Historical Association, Redwood City, CA.

Betsy was a wonderful neighbor and Block Captain. She was beloved by all on Rolling Hills Avenue. She would knit a stocking for every child on the block, every year, personalized with their name and filled with treats and toys. She taught groups of scouts and homeschoolers about the history of the Ohlone in our area -- we still find bits of shells in Indian Springs Park where she taught us to look. She'd invite the neighborhood kids and their friends to swim in their pool. At one of our 4th of July block parties Betsy was recognized by state senator Jerry Hill for her contribution to the community. Ken and Betsy set the tone for how to be good neighbors, and we remember them both fondly.
