widow of Attorney Jerome Burkepile

Elizabeth S. Burkepile, 89, of Allentown, formerly of Northampton, died June 30, 2008, in her home at Luther Crest, South Whitehall Township. She was the wife of the late Attorney Jerome W. Burkepile Jr., who died in 1974.

Born in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Virginia (Vauclain) Smedley.

She was a great-niece of the late Samuel Matthews Vauclain, former chairman of the board of the Baldwin Locomotive Works, Philadelphia.

She was a 1941 graduate of Dickinson College, Carlisle, receiving her bachelor's degree in English.

She was the secretary for the Wiener & Certified Architectural firm of New York City for six years before moving to Northampton.

She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Whitehall.

She was a member of the former Northampton Business Professional Womens Club. She volunteered at the Allentown Art Museum.

She is survived by two daughters, Gretchen V. and her husband Wayne Douglas of Whitney Point, N.Y., and Lucinda B. and her husband Paul Rieur of Bethany, Conn.; four grandchildren, Thomas Dewing, Elizabeth Rieur, Lee Douglas and Lucia Rieur; and a cousin, Georgia and her husband Edwin Baldrige of Allentown.
