Elizabeth Carter Obituary

Elizabeth Kindred Bridgeman Carter. She was born to Ethel Lee Freeman and Joseph Kindred Sr. on January 16, 1938, in Gary, Indiana.

She attended Lincoln School and graduated from Froebel High School. She accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of Bethlehem A.M.E Zion. She served as a member of many offices during her time under the leadership of several pastors. What she was most proud of was the choir and beautifying committee which always brought her joy. She would talk about that for hours.

Liz, as she was affectionately known, was proceeded in death by two loving husbands, her son Gregory Sledge, mother and father, seven brothers and several nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

Liz leaves to cherish her memories to her loving daughter Carmellia (Renee and Norris) Jorden of Gary, Indiana. One sister, Edna Curtis (Benny) Cathy of Cleveland, Ohio, 4 grandchildren: Darryl Jones Sr., Jhuantanae Gillespy, Shantray Hooks, Kiara (Sledge) Simon, 8 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren ,17 nieces and nephews and 2 bonus grandchildren, Amber Scott and Nathaniel Ross and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation Tuesday April 22,2025 2:00p.m. to 7:00p.m. Funeral Wednesday April 23,2025 12:00p.m. all Services at Powell Coleman Funeral Home 3200 W. 15th Ave Gary,In. Burial Oak Hill Cemetery gary,In. Professional Services Rendered by Powell Coleman Funeral Home.

Mrs. Carter, you will be dearly missed. It’s a hard pill to swallow. I will cherish our late-night conversations in my heart. God places people in our lives for a reason, and you truly touched mine. You helped me find strength during the difficult time of my Granny’s transition. This one is especially tough. Jehovah loved you so much that He called home such a beautiful soul. Thank you for your encouraging words that inspired me to keep pursuing my journey. Mrs. Carter, my friend, I will miss you.
