Elizabeth Edwards Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 13, 2024.

Long time Colby, Kansas resident and patriot, Elizabeth Jewell (Fell) Edwards, 70, passed away peacefully in her son's home in Littleton, Colorado, on July 23, 2024. Her life was cut short with the sudden onset of aggressive cancer.

Elizabeth "Liz" was born December 9, 1953, in Burlington, CO, to parents Allen and Juanita Fell. She was the 4th of 6 siblings and the only daughter. She quickly learned how to play rough and hold her own with 5 rambunctious brothers. She was fortunate to grow up with numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins nearby.

Liz graduated at the top of her class from Douglas County High School in Castle Rock, CO, in 1972. She excelled at every subject. Sports were not offered to women at this time or Liz would have competed in every one possible. Nonetheless, Liz was involved with many activities including Future Teachers of America, French Club, Concert Choir, and National Honor Society. She was also voted "Best All-Around" by her peers. After high school, she attended Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, CO. She enjoyed college life and was able to compete in women's field hockey.

Following in her father's footsteps, Liz proudly served in the Army from 1974 to 1976. Her position as a Military Police allowed her to utilize her quick wit and intellect. She was medically and honorably discharged after a compromised secret mission ended in a fall off of a cliff. She was hospitalized in Germany and rehabilitated from her injury at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. with her mother by her side.

After she fully recovered, she attended college at Kansas State University and earned a BA in Elementary Education in 1982. She taught Music and Home Economics in Brewster, KS. One of her greatest accomplishments was putting on "The Concert for America". This musical endeavor filled with patriotic songs incorporated her love for the country with her love for music.

The greatest joy of Liz's life came on February 28, 1985 with the arrival of a son, Charles "Chuck" Allen Hall. Her world revolved around Chuck. She loved watching him compete in wrestling, baseball, and football. She also let him get away with just about anything.

While raising Chuck in Benkelman, NE, she joined a bowling league and enjoyed socializing with members of the community. Her competitive nature took her team to tournaments at the state level. As a natural caregiver, she also volunteered at Hester Home (a certified skilled nursing facility). Liz devoted much love, energy, and time to caring for her mother-in-law Irvaleta Edwards at her home.

Liz was blessed with a daughter when Xochi Lazo married Charles in September of 2020. Liz cherished the grandchildren that this union created and would do anything for her granddaughter Olive and grandson Xavier. Liz also loved her bonus family and appreciated spending time laughing with Xochi's parents, sisters, brothers, and extended family members.

Liz had a passion for traveling as much as she could. She never denied an opportunity to have fun or experience new things. She enjoyed gambling trips to Dodge City with her best friend, Martina Urban, and quite often came home a winner. She loved being outdoors, breathing mountain air, walking on the beach, and watching the waves in the ocean.

Liz's top priority was spending time with her family and friends. She liked playing games including Dominos, cards, and pretty much anything that looked fun. When Liz chose to do something, she was "all in". She never shied away from a challenge. Her laughter was infectious and brought delight to everyone around her. She never met a stranger. Her support and excitement for others was genuine.

She is survived by her son Charles (Xochi) Hall of Littleton, CO; brother Cecil (Carol) Fell of Alamosa, CO; brother William Fell of Castle Rock, CO; brother Richard (Joni) Fell of Sedalia, CO; brother John (Michelle) Fell of Centennial, CO; sister-in-law Nancy Fell of Schertz, TX; numerous nieces and nephews; and her cherished grandchildren Xavier and Olive.

Liz is preceded in death by her parents, Allen and Juanita Fell, and her brother Joe Fell.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org), Folds of Honor (www.foldsofhonor.org), or Army Women's Foundation (www.awfdn.org).

A Celebration of Life is being planned with family and friends later in August .

This lady was one of my great treasures in my list of friendships. Although life took us different directions, she always greeted me as if we hadn't missed a moment; filling me in on Chuck and his adventures as well as her own. She loved with her whole heart and, she was happy with her life, what she had accomplished, the students she had taught, her service for her country, grateful for her friends and family. What a legacy she left with all of us.
