Elizabeth Hightower Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 5, 2009.
"Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints." Psalm 116:15 On June 3, 2009, Elizabeth Logue Hightower departed this life and joined Jesus in Heaven. Elizabeth was born January 12, 1917, in Patrick, Texas, to Thomas Jasper and Maggie Scott Logue. The family moved to Waco, Texas, where Elizabeth graduated with honors from both Waco High School and Baylor University. While at Baylor, Elizabeth worked in the registrar's office and was a member of the Athenean Club. Elizabeth taught school in Hewitt for two years prior to her marriage in 1940 to her college sweetheart Ross Hightower. During WW II, she and Ross traveled the southern coast of the United States where Ross was a land agent for Shell Oil Company. In 1947 they moved to Livingston, Texas, for Ross to begin his law practice. In Livingston, Elizabeth was a homemaker for many years and then later a substitute teacher for LISD. She served the children of Livingston for 7 years as a classroom teacher. Elizabeth was an active member of the PTA and the LHS Band Boosters. She was a member of the DAR and the AAUW. Elizabeth was a hospital volunteer, a reading tutor, and a member of the Murphy Memorial Library Board for many years. The Hightowers were members of Central Baptist Church in Livingston for over 40 years. When her children were young, Elizabeth taught Sunday School in the Children's Division. In later years, she taught several women's Sunday School classes. The Ruth Sunday School members and the Gleaners Sunday School members were very dear to her. She was a member of the Women's Missionary Union. She loved her Sunday School members, her church, and her church family. In 2001, Elizabeth moved to Nacogdoches where she resided at The Arbor. There she was loved and cared for and appreciated for her sweet spirit and cheerful outlook on life. Elizabeth is predeceased by her parents; her husband of 55 years; two brothers, Joseph M. Logue and William C. Logue; one sister, Dorothy Logue Rush; a son, William Lockhart Hightower; and a granddaughter, Pamela Jane Hightower. She is survived by a very large family who loved her very much. She leaves behind two siblings, Helen Logue Carll, of Bloomington, Indiana, and Rev. Thomas J. Logue, of Little Rock, Arkansas, and her four children, Helen Hightower Grout (Jarrell) of Nacogdoches, Allen Ross Hightower, Jr. (Debbie) of Huntsville; Susan Hightower Nabors of Canyon Lake; and Richard F. Hightower of Houston. She was "Bammaw" to 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren: Joya Grout Soell (Mark Ryan) and Sam Soell of Conifer, Colorado; Allen Ross Hightower III, (Kristin), Caroline and Julianne Hightower of Houston; Julie Cassity Buchta (Brian), Erin and Logan Buchta of Keithville, Louisiana; Danny Cassity (Chrissy), David and Lauren Cassity of Huntington; Duane Evans of Austin; Amy Grout Muldoon (Dean) and Sean Muldoon of Minneapolis, Minnesota; Ross Evans of Kentucky; Patti Hightower of Huntsville; Michael Smith of Nacogdoches; Colby Lister of Livingston; Jeffery Nabors of Canyon Lake; Krista and Hunter Branam of Livingston; and Bret Hightower of Houston. Elizabeth is also survived by a brother-in-law W. G. Arnold of Liberty, and two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Hightower of Sugar Land and Gloria Logue of Waco. She leaves many beloved nieces and nephews on both the Logue and Hightower sides of the family, as well as dear friends in Livingston and in Nacogdoches at The Arbor. Memorials may be made to Murphy Memorial Library, Hospice of Deep East Texas, and Texas Baptist Children's Home. Visitation will be held at Cochran Funeral Home from 5 - 8 PM Friday, June 5. The funeral will be held Saturday, June 6, at 2 PM at Central Baptist Church, Livingston. Please sign the online guest book at www.cochranfh.com.

To the Hightower Family:

My sincere sympathy to you at your time of loss. The Logue Family and the Simon Family go way back. My aunt Jane was married to Joe Logue for many years. Our family lived behind Bill and Gloria for several years too. Please know that you all will be in my thoughts and prayers today during your time of loss. May God wrap His loving arms around each of you.

Richard, you were my class-mate and I remember your Mom and father fondly. Whether it was her hard work in the LISD school system or her volunteer work at the hospital, she was a gift for anyone who needed her support. I know that both of your parents were very proud of each of you and your accomplishments. May our prayers bring you comfort and peace in your time of grief. -Edith Ryans Landers.

Allen, Debbie and family, I am so sorry to read of your loss. God doesn't make mistakes. I believe and I am sure you believe that Mrs. Hightower has just stepped into eternal glory and peace. That sentiment may sound trite at this time but it will bring you solace and comfort in the coming days and years. God bless you all.

Condolences to The Hightower Family:

I never had the distinct honor of meeting Mrs. Elizabeth Hightower - but, I know that she was "a very special person who touched many lives".

I just want the entire Hightower Family to know that she is with our Lord - and with that, Heaven is a much better place.

Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you all - GOD BLESS!

Love,

Pat Grimm
