Elizabeth Kircos Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Elizabeth Ann Kircos passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025. She was 90 years old.

Elizabeth, called Betty Ann during her early years, Betty as an adult, and Elizabeth later in life, was born in Denver, Colorado on June 18, 1934. Her family moved frequently as a result of her father's growing work responsibilities and during his Army service from 1941-45. She lived in places as varied as Austin TX, Birmingham AL, and Jerome AZ, finally graduating from Bisbee High School in Bisbee, AZ in 1952. Elizabeth attended Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University), graduating at the top of her class in 1956 with a BA in English and a teaching certificate. Choosing the sky over the schoolyard, Elizabeth was a stewardess for United Airlines from 1957-58 until she married Paul Kircos. She always loved flying and looked back on those days as some of her fondest memories.

Elizabeth and Paul met in New Jersey and lived there briefly before moving to Detroit, MI, where Paul took over his family business. They had three children: Andrea, David, and Zoe. After divorcing in 1977, Elizabeth went back to school for a Masters in Social Work, receiving her degree from Wayne State University in 1979. She provided individual therapy through Family Service of Detroit and Wayne County for five years before running her own psychotherapy practice until she retired in 2002. She lived in Rochester Hills from 1980 until her passing, spending her last three years at Bellbrook senior living community.

An accomplished seamstress, Elizabeth sewed for her children, grandchildren, their dolls, their friends, and their classrooms, and made dresses and reusable pads for non-profit organizations serving girls in developing communities. She never met a fabric store she didn't like – but Haberman's was her favorite.

In her retirement, Elizabeth was devoted to the choir at the Congregational Church of Birmingham, to volunteering at the Resale Connection in Rochester, and to her volunteer role as fiction editor at The McGuffin, a national literary magazine housed at Schoolcraft College. She loved to read, sing, listen to opera, and enjoy a nice glass of wine. And ice cream. Butter pecan. She loved butter pecan.

Elizabeth is survived by her children, Andrea Kircos Skinner (Steve), David Kircos, and Zoe Kircos (Pete Rast), her grandchildren, Michael Skinner (Erica), Daniel Skinner (Myrna), and Carlye Slater (Conrad), Erin Rast, and Ava Rast, her great grandchildren, Orion Skinner, Emryss Skinner, and Josephine Skinner, and her sister, Wilma Lentz.

A memorial ceremony will be held at the Congregational Church of Birmingham United Church of Christ, currently located at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 3633 W. Big Beaver Road, Troy, MI on June 6, 2025. Guests are invited to pay their respects from 9:30-10:30am; the service will begin at 10:30am.

Those who wish to make donations honoring Elizabeth's memory should direct them to the Assistance League of Southeastern Michigan, https://www.assistanceleague.org/southeastern-michigan/donate.

I enjoyed working with Elizabeth at the store, Resale Connection. She worked with the Women´s Pricing Committee and kept our end caps looking good. She was a cheery addition to our staff. We have missed her. Joyce Perron

I worked with Elizabeth on the Women´s Pricing Committee for many years. She had a special kind of wit and always dedicated herself to helping others. She never missed a Tuesday committee. We celebrated her 86 birthday by buying her a cake and the surprise birthday party was fun filled with lots of Liz stories. Rest in peace dear Elizabeth. You were very special to the WPC and me.

I´m saddened to hear the news of Liz. She gave so much to The MacGuffin. Her insight was invaluable. I enjoyed working with her, and all the wonderful dinners we shared after our Thursday meetings! She often spoke of her family, and was so proud of them. Here´s one of many photos from my archives. She will be dearly missed.

I knew Elizabeth back in the late 70's. I was and still consider myself to be a close friend of her son Dave. Dave and I played in a band together and Elizabeth's basement was where the band spent countless nights and hours practicing...very loudly. She was more than tolerant of us. Elizabeth was a special lady. She was a gentle and caring lady who showed me nothing but kindness and generosity during a time in my life when I desperately needed it. I will never forget her.

Elizabeth and I met through volunteering at the Assistance League. Three of us had lunch a couple years ago at the Senior Activities Center. I had the pleasure of visiting her at Bellbrook. We had endless things to talk about... from her counseling work, opera, books etc. Several of her books looked so interesting that I snapped photos of the covers for future reads. I was to pick her up for Mistletoe two years ago but that didn't happen. Later her daughter texted me back to explain...that same Seattle daughter whom I accidentally met this April when she brought in donations right after moving her mother to Bellbrook's Memory Care. I was filling in and our meeting was meant to happen. I hope it helped her during that difficult weekend to speak to someone who knew and admired her mother. When Elizabeth stopped driving, her local son came in to take her home. He let us add his name as a family contact. Her family was there for her. Love and admired by many, Elizabeth had a full life.

What a life she led! I had no idea. Elizabeth and I shared many mornings at the ReSale Connection. She dressed the end caps on the clothing racks as I worked in the store. Lots of laughs. Great memories. She is missed.

I am with the Assistance League of SE Michigan. I am a Past President of our Chapter 2019-20 and I worked many times on Saturday's with Elizabeth over the years since I joined Assistance League in 2011. She was an intelligent hard working woman with a passion to help others in need and a fixture at the store on Saturday mornings. We ask that someone in the family contact me with a name and address for us to send notification of donations made in your mom's name to our charity. We have already gotten a couple.
