Elizabeth "Betty" Kusler
1918 - 2016
Elizabeth "Betty" Kusler, 97, of Meridian died on May 2, 2016, at her home. Betty was born to John and Lydia Kessler on November 15, 1918, in Beulah, North Dakota, in her grandmother's sod house. She was educated in Beulah and later taught in the Beulah area for seven years. She attended college at Wartburg Lutheran College in Waverly, Iowa; Dickinson Teachers College in Dickinson, North Dakota; University of Idaho in Moscow, Idaho; College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho; Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa, Idaho and Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.
On December 26, 1941 she married Ace Kusler, who preceded her in death on January 21, 1982. Ace and Betty came to Meridian, Idaho, in September 1945 and bought Milk Route #13 from Challenge Creamery, a prosperous industry in Meridian. Betty worked at McFadden's Market as a clerk until she began teaching second grade in September 1946; she retired in 1977. During those years she was active in the Meridian District Education Association, Idaho Education, National Education, Idaho Consortium, and the Meridian P.T.A. She received the Mason Award for Appreciation for Service by Teachers in 1967. She was honored as Teacher of the Year for the Meridian School District in 1976 and again in 1977, and in 1986 she was given the Locust Grove Grange Woman of the Year Award.
For several years she and Ace danced with Boots and Bows Square Dancers and Swing and Sway Round Dancers of Nampa. She was active in the blood drawings in Meridian for 18 years, receiving the state award in 1987. She was a member of Meridian United Methodist Church and the Circle Five, a Charter Member of Alpha Delta Kappa Teachers Sorority since 1960, and was given the Silver Sister Award. Betty was in P.E.O. Chapter AD since 1972; was a 50 year member of the Royal Neighbors of America, and in 1985 she organized a social Retired Teachers Group, called L.O.T. (Little Old Teachers).
On April 16, 1990, she married Harold McBride of Williston, North Dakota. Harold preceded her in death on November 15, 1995. She enjoyed sharing the beauties of God's world as she traveled to each continent (64 countries), including a safari to Kenya, Africa. She made friends wherever she traveled, keeping in touch with many of them. Betty enjoyed giving travelogues to various organizations in the Meridian area. She also did volunteer work at the Chamber of Commerce Visitors desk. She was passionately involved in establishing the Pine Street School Museum as she had taught 10 years in that small school. She won the 2012 Mayor's Legacy Award. The legacy of the Pine Street School Museum is carried on by the Historic Society.
In 2014, Betty moved to Touchmark's Meadow Lake Village where she made many new dear friends. She enjoyed writing and wrote over 400 articles for the Valley News.
Betty is survived by her nieces: Joan Fitzgerald; Cindi Swanson and her husband, Jim, and her children Shane Reiser and Tiffany Gonzalez; Debra Fitzgerald; Faith Fitzgerald-Michaelson and her husband, Jim, and her son Bridger Williamson; Faye Harrison and her husband, David, and their children Isabel and Evan; Johnelle Kusler; Milda Hedelom; and nephew Jim Kusler. Elizabeth Kusler was my favorite teacher ever!. She loved her "kids" and we loved her back. I am remembering the last time I saw her when together we rang the Pine Street school bell after my mother's memorial services.

Mrs. Kusler was my 2nd grade teacher in the 70's. She was such a sweet lady who always helped us start our days right by singing "Good morning to you, good morning to you. We're all in our places with bright shining faces..." Such a wonderful teacher, so caring and kind. I am glad she had such a long and productive life. I will always remember her.

Mrs Kusler was my second grade teacher and she taught me the joy of learning! She was the best teacher. Her bright smile and her joy of life will be missed. She is with her love, Ace. God bless.

When I was in 2nd grade in 1952-1953 there were only two classes, one taught by Mrs. Truman Scott and one by Mrs. Betty Kusler, but both were held in their separate, one-room buildings beside the open canal that ran along Pine Street. My older sister had Mrs. Kusler as her 2nd grade teacher and when I was assigned to Mrs. Scott I was not pleased as some of my friends had been assigned to Mrs. Kusler's class. While I probably received an adequate 2nd grade education from Mrs. Scott I have always been disappointed that it was not from Betty.
While attending my 50th class reunion a few of us visited with Betty in her pride and joy, the second grade building museum she was instrumental in creating (better known as the Pine Street School Museum). I was amazed that she remembered many of those who visited who had been her students and even more amazed that she knew me and some of the others who hadn't been her students.
After reading her obituary I was astonished by the list of credits and accomplishments for her; we have lost a true treasure in her passing. My sincere condolences to her family and friends. Rest in peace dear lady you will be missed.

Betty lived life to the fullest everyday! She looked for the good in everyone and thus she had her second grade students still close to her 30 to 40 years later. Her legacy will not be forgotten. She touched more lives and made such a difference in all of us that loved her.
She was the most outgoing and kind person. I loved hearing stories of how she dealt with "difficult" students...she loved them into being the person they could be..that was her way. Love always wins....
Rest in peace

Betty was my second grade teacher and taught me a love of reading.Through the years, there are a few teachers I've treasured and Betty is one. After reading an article about her and the little one-room school in Meridian, I reconnected with her and it was a true joy to share time, mutual travels, and stories with her. God blessed our little community with a dear soul. A life well lived. My prayers to all her family.

I had Mrs. Brown in 2nd grade, but friends were in Mrs. Kulsler's class. A time from Meridian's past. A life lived well.

Betty was my second grade teacher in Meridian in 1956-1957. She was dedicated to teaching her pupils to read and write using Phonics. Education was her life.

Meridian,Idaho, lost one of its brightest stars this past week. Betty came into my life by marrying my dad, an unhapppy widower. The mood around our house certainly changed! Betty loved to take part in everything and she took Dad with her. My dad danced at my brothers' wedding (and so did Betty) I didn't realize that he he knew how to dance..She told stories about her travels around the world. She became s good joke teller. She recounted stories from her teaching days. Betty loved teaching and loved her students. Through Betty I learned the details of Meridian's school district's first and historic school classroom. She was taking a painting class; Since she entered this project like she entered every project..with enthusiasm.. she leaves behind the best decorated garage; thee inside walls are decorated with her paintings.
Betty loved our children and the rest of my dad's grandchildren as her very own. They all returned the love. There is one word used in this is commentary more than any other. Betty McBride Kusler was filled with LOVE and was so willing to share all her LOVE; so willing to give it away.

"Grandma Betty" was my neighbor and we loved her to pieces. My daughter would visit her almost weekly until she moved to Touchmark. She has been on my mind alot lately and I really miss her. Heaven has gained a new angel!!!

Let me be the first to write on Betty's Guest Book page..the profound love & admiration that I have in my heart for this amazing woman! She touched my life via The Pinestreet Schoolhouse. I was honored to work with her and helped schedule the elementary classes that would tour the old building. Betty spoke to them and dressed the part of the One Room School House Era. I pray she is at peace now and smiling her famous smile and knows how so many people will love & MISS her! Thank-YOU dear sweet Betty for being my "Friend"--YOU are the Best Teacher ever! Save a place in line for me! Sincere Sympathy and may God comfort give in the days ahead. ~Helen Birch~
