Elizabeth (Libby) E. Ellis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 26 to Feb. 28, 2024.
Libby Ellis died peacefully at her home on the afternoon of February 22nd at the age of 100 with her family all around.

Libby was born in Gloucester to the late Thomas and Carrie Lannon; she was one of six children. She was married to her husband Fred for 43 wonderful years and together they raised seven children. Libby graduated from St. Ann's School, Gloucester High School, and then Burdett secretarial school.

She had many interests including bowling, playing weekly card games with her close group of friends, spending time with her family, and knitting. She was an amazing knitter; crafting hundreds of pairs of socks, intricate sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, and so much more for her family and friends. Libby loved sports - it was not unusual to see her outside throwing a football with her kids. She frequented all of her children's and grandchildren's sporting events and spent many afternoons enjoying a football game at her son's house. She was also an avid cribbage player at the Senior Center for many years, often winning the pot at the end of the season!

Libby was incredibly generous and kind. She was a great cook and always ready to send a batch of homemade custard with a cozy pair of PJs to anyone in need. Her chocolate chip cookies are legendary and have cured more than one problem over the years. Libby will be remembered with a smile on her face; there was rarely a time she was not laughing. She always said that the secret to a long life is to laugh.

Libby was a woman of strong faith as a member of Holy Family Parish. Her faith was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Libby is survived by her seven children: sons Tom Ellis (wife Lin), Kevin Ellis (wife Karen), Kent Ellis (wife Linda), Mark Ellis (wife Dawn), Mike Ellis (wife Kim), Fred Ellis, and daughter Cheri McCarthy. Sixteen grandchildren: grandsons Brian Ellis (wife Melissa), Heath Ellis (wife Evie), Luke Ellis (partner Abby), Patrick Ellis (partner Carrie), Nick Ellis (wife Michelle), Jesse Ellis, Joe Ellis (wife Kelly), Dylan Ellis, Erik Rajunas, and granddaughters Jillian Hensley (husband Dan), Casey McCarthy, Shannon McCarthy (fiancé Brett), Allie MacKay (husband Joe), Lilly Rodriguez (husband Jared), Lauren Christo (husband Josh), and Krista Rajunas (partner Jason). Her great-grand children include Sydney, Elisa, Genevieve, Isabelle, Silas, Vera, Rose, Jaden, and Jack. Libby had a special bond with her nephew Matt Jackson (partner Annie) and his daughter Ariana, as well as her niece Mary Jane LaBelle and her sons Nick (wife Taji) and Allie (wife Yoli).

Libby was predeceased by her husband Fred and her siblings and their spouses in addition to her beloved daughters-in-laws Kay Ellis and Carol Ellis.

The Ellis Family would like to thank the exceptional staff from Care Dimensions for all their help; especially to nurse Maureen for her kindness and compassion. Additional gratitude is extended to Julie Andrews and Senior Care's Jill for their loving care.

A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Family Parish (60 Prospect St, Gloucester, MA) at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 2, 2024. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Holy Family Parish, 60 Prospect St, Gloucester, MA 01930.

Aunt Lib used to make 9 beds every day because Nanny lived with her too. On weekends I remember going over to Madison Ave and helping her..she´d be on one side, I´d be on the other. I think I was about 12, which would be 1957. I wanted to be just like her when I grew up.
