Elizabeth Margedant Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 17, 2025.
Elizabeth Kathryn Margedant (Jones), "Katie", was born in Pensacola on Sept 1, 1940. She was the third child of John Paul and Elizabeth Jones, quickly followed by her twin brother Bill, her slightly younger twin; a role he never relished. Katie accepted Christ at a young age as a member of First United Methodist Church of Pensacola; a membership she never relinquished. Katie completed her schooling throughout Pensacola, graduating from Pensacola High School with the class of 1958. She participated in several clubs at PHS; was a member of the "Anchor Club", various girls sports, the Christian Youth and the Flower Club. She was also selected into the "Who's Who" for her class of '58. She went onto the University of Florida for a time until her marriage but completed her BS Marketing degree at University of West Florida later in her years.

Her marriage to John W. Margedant, a Naval Aviator took her to many states and countries. She resided in Indiana, Maryland, California, Georgia, Florida, Washington DC as well as Japan and Germany. While in these varied locations, she took advantage to travel throughout as well as visits to Hong Kong, Tokyo, Austria, Paris, Italy and many more. Kathryn had a zest for travel as well as trying all the different cuisines. Her appreciation of different cultures and their food deepened her desire to cook what she ate and she became a very accomplished chef in her own right. So much so, that she taught new arrivals and newly wedded ladies how to cook International cuisine while she lived in Yokohama, Japan. Not a bad feat for a girl who couldn't do scrambled eggs when she first got married. Kathryn always showed a tenacity towards learning new subjects and mastering them as she could.

Towards her latter years, Kathryn often reflected upon her years in Pensacola and especially growing up on Bayou Texar. Many stories revolved around masses of friends playing at their home on the Bayou, endless days swimming with her brothers and loving to water ski on the Bayou. Often the story ended with her being slung around the boat by her brothers and then having the motor cut off and her sinking into that wonderful Florida mud that fills Carpenters Creek. (I'm still boggled how this was a good memory, but she repeated it often, so it must have been.) Her zeal for good food and service to others may have been started by her father; John Paul Jones. He apparently was a wonderful cook also and his specialty was "rosin potatoes"; which she craved all of her life but unfortunately could never recreate his method to enjoy again. I trust that's part of her first meal up in Heaven.

Kathryn's love of life, always wanting a moment to be special, her boundless energy and indomitable spirit will be missed by all. She was an original, in her acts, the love she gave, and in her original style of dress and unique jewelry choices. Kathryn was always "dressed to the nines"!

She was one of a kind and a true class act. She always had a smile when I saw her. The world will truly be a little bit less unique without her in it.

There are many great memories of cousin Kay. She always had a great smile and wonderful laugh. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. This is a photo from last March with her son, some of her cousins and their spouses, and a cousin in-law couple.
