Elizabeth Nelson Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province on Aug. 1, 2009.

NELSON Elizabeth (nee: Morrison) February 8, 1927 _ July 21, 2009 Passed away peacefully in Burnaby Hospital following complications from surgery for a broken hip. Predeceased by her sister Phyllis McAninch, brother-in-law Jim McAninch, sister Mary Fitzgerald, brother Bud Morrison, her beloved Aunt Mame, husband Ken Young and husband Arnold Nelson. She will be deeply missed by nephews Rob and Steve McAninch, step daughter Karen Struve, nieces Cathy Gauld and Pat Morrison, sister-in-law Elvie Morrison, and by many dear friends including her lifelong friends Bernice McDougald and Margaret Tiping, Peggy Kurlic, Marion and Bill Martin, Sylvia Kranjc and her close, friend of over 40 years Roy Bonkowski. Elizabeth was particularly close to her sister Phyllis and her brother Bud. Their strong bonds of love and shared history could only be broken by death. Like her sisters & brother, Elizabeth was a forceful personality, highly verbal with a great sense of humour. She was patriotic & very loyal to the Royal Family, particularly the Queen, the Queen Mother & King George the sixth. With her keen intelligence and strong work ethic, she was a valued employee in a variety of industries once she began working full-time at age 16. She worked in the insurance industry for a number of years in Canada, as well as England and Australia. She left that industry in the 1960's having become tired, in her words, of "training her bosses." She then became a real estate agent at Block Brothers where she met her dear friend Roy Bonkowski. Elizabeth's life was not without adversity but she always bounced back and maintained a positive spirit. An avid reader, she also got a great kick out of card games, and was a sharp handicapper at Hastings Park Race Track. She and her sister Phyllis loved to look for treasures at Antique Fairs. Elizabeth's love of her family was a huge part of who she was. Her nephews Rob and Steve will never forget the great support and love she gave to their Mother Phyllis during her final illness. Like the horses she bet at Hastings Park, she was a thoroughbred - a class act - who will never be forgotten by those who were lucky enough to be a part of her life. May God Bless You Aunty Betty & try not to raise too much of a ruckus when you arrive in Heaven, as you surely will.
