Elizabeth TAMKE Obituary

Published by Saskatoon StarPhoenix from Nov. 20 to Nov. 21, 2012.
Elizabeth Christine Tamke
Elizabeth, born December 19, 1919, fourth child of George and Rose (nee Schmautz) Singler, passed away peacefully on November 19th, 2012 at Luther Special Care Home, with her children by her side. Liz grew up on the family farm in the Haultain District, and then Victor School District and Melness School District southeast of Saskatoon. Attending Trinity Lutheran Church, she met Bill Tamke in 1938 and they were married on October 23, 1941 in a double wedding with Liz's brother John and Bill's sister Louise. Bill and Liz farmed in the Coates School District in the Dundurn area until retiring to Saskatoon in 1986. In their retirement they enjoyed spending time at their cabin at Emma Lake fishing, traveling, and wintering in Arizona. Mom loved family gatherings and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Mom will always be known as a fantastic cook, baker and seamstress. She enjoyed getting together with friends to socialize and play cards, especially schmear. She loved listening to music, taking part in a good sing-song, and dancing. Amazingly, despite her dementia, she still remembered most of the words to her favourite hymns and old songs. She loved watching sports, especially the Blue Jays. Curling was another one of her favourite sports. One of her greatest achievements was as a team member winning the Ladies Northern Curling Championships in 1964 with Yvonne, Polly and Ruth. Later on she ventured out with friends from the condo on bus trips to Branson and the Maritimes. Liz is survived by her sons Roland (Lorraine), Larry (Norma), Terry (Judy), and her daughter Sandra (Dennis) Bannerholt; her eight grandchildren, who were very special to her, Barry (Beth), Brian (Joy), Bonnie (Patrick), Holly (Byron), Trevor (Jennifer), Carlene (Jess), Nicole, and Chad (Natalie); step grandchildren, Ryan (Coreen) Bannerholt and Troy (Breanne) Bannerholt; step great-grandchildren, Caleb, Christian, Cassidy, Ryker and Quinn; and her fifteen great-grandchildren Lorisa, Alyssa, Jude, Evan, Max, Brady, Taylor, Kyra, Janaye, Davis, Aleya, Taylor, Mackenzie, Jack and Lily. She is also survived by sisters-in- law, Edna Matthews, Margaret Schmirler, Lil Tamke, Dorothy Singler, Mary Singler, and brothers-in-law, Carl Tamke, Frank Schmirler, Bruce Hartney, Ed Dirks and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Liz was predeceased by her parents, George and Rose Singler, her loving husband Bill of 54 years, siblings and their spouses Jake and Thelma Singler, John and Louise Singler, Mary and Larry Sanderson, Henry Singler, Evelyn Hartney, Margaret Dirks, Edna Tamke, Dorothy and Gerald Moore, Harold Singler, and Gordon Singler; by brothers-in-law Gordon Tamke, Bob Haatvedt and Jake Matthews. Our family would like to extend sincere thanks to everyone at Luther Special Care Home for their care and compassion in the four years that mom lived there. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Luther Special Care Home, Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice. The Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 23rd, at Faith Lutheran Church (2801 Preston Avenue). The TAMKE family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time. Your mom always had a big smile on her face and the time to "chat" with us when we saw her. She was a great lady. Her "deep" laugh will not be forgotten. May you find peace in knowing she is in a much better place now, reunited with your dad.
