Ellen Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2022.
Ellen Jean Phillips was born in Colton, CA., San Bernardino County, on April 21, 1939, at 2: 15 am, to Mr. & Mrs. Charles Terrence Sandlin. The Sandlin's only child, Ellen, was cherished; she recalled, "I learned the value of hard work and thrift from my father. I learned kindness and grace from my mother."

Ellen graduated from Colton Union High School at the top of her class. For health reasons, Ellen could not attend her 65th reunion this past April. "I was voted 'best preserved' at my last reunion," she recalled laughingly.

Ellen first saw her life partner Jack Leslie Phillips at Colton High. "I'd noticed him, but he was three years my senior. A girlfriend from church invited me on a blind date, and there he was! And, no, we didn't date much. I wanted to go to the prom(s), and he was too old." Ellen graduated in 1957 at the top of her high school class. She went to U.C. Riverside, graduating with degrees in Psychology, Math, and Education.

On the heels of graduation, Ellen Sandlin and Jack Phillips were married at the Methodist church in their hometown of Colton, California, and from then on, they were "Jack and Ellen." Inseparable.

Jack's technical engineering took him from California to Texas to Washington, DC. In 1969 Jack's job brought them back to California. "Jack had top-secret security clearance with the U.S. government; I guess you could say he was a spy," Ellen admitted after Jack passed in 2017. "My Renaissance Man."

Ellen discovered their final home on Mt. Helix in 1973, "It was perfect. Everything we'd always wanted, the land, the barns, and, oh, yes, the house." By all accounts, their home was a showplace.

Ellen loved her books, her home, her dogs (all named Fritzi), and Mt Helix, but mostly her neighbors and many friends. "We'd all meet on our walks," a neighbor remembers. If you weren't a friend of Ellen's, you wanted to be. "She was a very special person."

Ellen passed from our site on the morning of May 31., 2022, at home among friends, as beautiful as ever, with dignity, grace, and courage.

Nature's first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf's a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf,

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day

Nothing gold can stay.

We loved you so much. ~

Please, no flowers.

I just learned of Ellen's death ... but it is heartening to see that she went from being a remarkable friend in high school to a memorable and much-loved older woman, as well.

Dear Ellen.
Visiting hours used to be three times a day. It's once a week now.
As long as Randy and I live, we will never forget you and Jack. The Nature Conservancy, The National Trust for Historic Preservation, will remember you for as long as America stands. Nancy Stroud and Ross Bradford will never forget you. Lisa Scott will never forget you or Fritz. Margie will never forget you. Betty will never forget you. Erica and her beautiful children will never forget you. You will be with them for the rest of their lives.
"We" weren't religious and were as blue as they come politically. Antiques, Randy, and politics; boy did we have fun! Our last forty-five days together were productive and happy.
But, on the night you left, we were with God. (Whoever she is.) No one will ever take that away from me. We talked and held tightly. Fritz jumped on the bed, and we relaxed.
I find myself sobbing, and it's not so bad; it's like a release valve. We left so much unspoken. But, you were going. I wasn't thinking, and you weren't, either. Earlier thoughts involved family;
your Grandma said, "Are you on the wheel?" (When you'd visit.) "Bring the machine around," my Grandma would say. You loved to dance to Hawaiian music. Jack loved Elvis Presley.
I tried to recite Saint Francis on our last afternoon together, without success. (I will end with it now.)
"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.
Grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and, it is in dying that we are born to eternal life."
Amen
We will be together again,
XO Jim and Randy

Jack and Ellen collected from New York to Los Angeles, then San Diego. Important Americana and California Impressionists filled their walls. The Jack and Ellen Phillips Estates collection will arrive in December in downtown Los Angeles.

I feel so fortunate to have been able to cross paths with Ellen. She extended nothing but kindness to me and was the absolute sweetest woman I have met. Not to mention her impeccable taste in art and antiques...
I will always cherish the memories of being in between her and Jim's friendly banter across her kitchen table, witnessing a beautiful friendship anyone would aspire to have.

She had many great qualities that made you be a better person. Thoughtful, Intelligent, Kind, an Old Fashion Friend, Great Moral Compass and a Sharp Witt.
To know her made you a better person.

God blessed us when we met Ellen. To say we were friends does not sound right. We loved Ellen and Jack. We worried about you alone in the big house...well, you got your exercise in. You left too soon.
Our heartfelt sympathies are with all your dear friends and family. We heard Ellen had passed,

"You didn't miss a thing down here, dear heart. We will be together soon and catch up on old times."
