Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 8, 2006.
Memorial service for Dr. Elmer Wayne Murdock, 73, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2006, at Austin Heights Baptist Church with Dr. James Howard officiating. On October 7, 1932, Elmer Wayne Murdock was born in Crowell, Texas, to William Elmer Murdock and Martha Elvira Langford Murdock. He was the youngest of five children. He is survived by his wife, Elaine Ennis Murdock; daughter and husband, Susanne Elaine and Wes Myler of Lone Oak, Texas; son and wife, Shannon Wayne and Melanie Murdock of Houston, Texas. Five granddaughters, Ashley Myler, Hayley Myler and Bailey Myler of Lone Oak, Texas; Natalie Murdock and Sophia Murdock of Houston, Texas also survive him. A brother and wife, Loren and Lena Murdock of Arlington, Texas; and a sister and husband, Sybil and Bud Fuller of Bluegrove, Texas, also survive him. Numerous nephews and nieces also survive. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents William and Martha Murdock as well as brothers, Guinn and Charlie Murdock. Wayne graduated from Denton High School at age 16 and began pursuing his goal of attaining his Ph.D. After obtaining his bachelor¹s degree in accounting from The University of North Texas in 1960, he worked as an accountant for Moore Business Forms in Denton, Texas, before entering the graduate program on a night school basis in 1964. He continued to work full-time while achieving his master¹s degree (January 1967) in economics from The University of North Texas and also met and married his wife, Elaine, a co-worker at Moore Business Forms. In the fall of 1967, he became an instructor of business and economics for two years at East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma. He then entered the doctoral program at the University of Oklahoma, working part-time as assistant to the vice-president of operations. He achieved his doctorate in 1971, taught a year at Central State University in Edmond, Oklahoma, then joined the business faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas. During his Oklahoma days, he testified before a U.S. Senate sub-committee, chaired by Senator Robert F. Kennedy, as an expert witness on workman¹s compensation, the subject of his doctoral dissertation. His dissertation as well as other publications remain in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Wayne was active in administrative roles with youth baseball locally, a frequent election judge and a long-time supporter of Lumberjack and LadyJack athletics. He was also a member and officer of the Faculty Senate. After retirement in December 1998, as a tenured professor of economics from Stephen F. Austin State University, Wayne spent his time reading, watching his many movies, doing his beloved crossword puzzles and traveling to historical sites of interest. He doted on his children and grandchildren. He was loved by many and will be missed by all. Memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 630683, Nacogdoches, Texas 75963-0683.
