Elmer Oblander Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 20, 2024.

Elmer LaDon Oblander, known affectionately as Don, passed away on August 14, 2024, at the age of 85 in Enid, Oklahoma. Don was born on July 10, 1939, in Alva, Oklahoma. His parents were Goldie Ellen Meier and Elmer Edwin Oblander.
His father and mother were school teachers. His father was also a principal and superintendent.
Don graduated from Blackwell High School in 1957. In high school he loved to play basketball and run track.
After high school, he attended Southwestern Adventist University in Keene, Texas from 1957-58.
After one year in Texas, he moved to Tonkawa, Oklahoma and met Sharon Sanborn. They met in junior college and married in 1959.
He went on to finish his degree at Union College in Lincoln Nebraska where he graduated with a Degree in religion/agriculture animal husbandry.

In 1961 he moved to Okeene, Oklahoma. He had 3 children.

Through his life Don had many accomplishments. He served on the Board of Agriculture, he was a member of the Grand Ole Opera in Enid Oklahoma, sang for 5th Sunday Sings in the community, and sang in the church quartets.

The farm and his cattle were his love. He worked many hours on the farm with his children, Starla, John, and Sheryl.

He loved all animals. He once pulled over for a homeless dog on the side of the country road. He felt sorry for her and rescued her. His son John, Trixie, and Trixie's puppy, Millie, went everywhere with Don.

Don also loved the cats that would show up at the "Gerken Place". He would always have food in the back of the pickup truck for them. It didn't matter what time of the day it was, he would not let a day go by without feeding the barn cats.

Don's greatest love was his wife. His nickname for Sharon was "Shari". Sharon loved dancing and he would always walk in the room and twirl her around and start dancing no matter what he was doing.

He was a man who loved his family and had John by his side and in the family home until the day he passed away.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church and its congregation was an integral part of his life as well. While being a member, he served various times on the school board, church board, was an elder, singer, and would write and give many sermons. He loved the Lord with all of his heart. He read and studied his bible daily. He was at prayer meeting the Wednesday before he passed.

Don was proceded in death by his mother Goldie Ellen Meier and father Elmer Edwin Oblander,
Baby LaDon, many aunts and uncles.

Uncle Don used to let me sit on a flipped bucket next to his seat on the combine while he worked. He was patient with any questions I asked about farming. He was a gentle giant of a guy with the most beautiful voice. When we were little, he´d put on a baseball cap, flip the brim up and pretend to be an undereducated farm hand with a thick German accent and crack us up with his stories. I have very happy memories of a week or two spent on an Oklahoma farm every summer.
RIP to my favorite uncle.

Don was a special kind of man who loved God and he loved people. As a young man I was blessed to work for Don in the fields. I don't remember that he ever got angry or upset.
Sharon always brought us a delicious homemade meal. Even in harvest we never worked late. We stopped extra early on Friday afternoons. I was often asked to join the family for dinner and conversation before going home. It was one of the best summers of my life. I hope to see him again in heaven very soon.

So sorry for your loss. Always enjoyed his singing and playing for him. One of my favorites was Tennessee Ernie Fords song "Come On Down Lord Jesus and Take Us Away". LaDon were special friend from high school days. Will be greatly missed. You will always hold him in your heart.

Meeting him at the Okeene SDA Church the first Saturday that they had their first service in the new church. It was my second time to be inside an SDA Church. He welcomed me and he sang that day. Thought I needed his autograph and find out where I could buy his music! Never disappointed with his singing. Loved him dearly!
